Can Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva help Detroit compete in the Eastern Conference?

 byOly Sandor
Instead of delivering an elite talent, Detroit signed two good but not great free agents in Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. And Dumars, despite being in a buyer’s market, paid both very fair money -Gordon got five years at $55 million, while Villanueva also inked a five-year deal for $35 million. To be fair, the Pistons have an eclectic collection of players, but is it enough in the much (...).

For now, Don Nelson and Stephen Jackson must play nice in Golden State

 byOly Sandor
Initially, these two were a match with the Warriors, connecting over being ’misunderstood’ by their NBA peers. Jackson publicly praised Nelson. And vice-versa. Months ago, Nelson even named Jackson a co-captain and added an extra three years and 30 million dollars to his contract ....

Is DeMar DeRozan Toronto’s best athlete since Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady?

 byOly Sandor
After a disastrous 2009, Toronto Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo wanted to upgrade the wing positions. So ’The Golden Boy’ in the executive suite signed free agent small forward Hedo Turkoglu and acquired shooting guard Antoine Wright in a trade with Dallas. However, his best move might be drafting DeMar DeRozan. The lottery pick has impressed at training camp and, with respect to Jamario Moon, (...).

Can Anthony and Billups lead Denver past L.A. and San Antonio in the west?

 byOly Sandor
A basketball renaissance occurred in Denver last year because the team swapped shot-first Allen Iverson for pass-first Billups. Fair or not, Iverson’s scoring and ball dominating ways confused; Billups’ passing and leadership clarified. For instance, after Iverson, Anthony became the undisputed first option on offense. Best of all, the forward’s game matured throughout the season -‘Melo, (...).

Shannon Brown’s best poster-job dunk: Mikki Moore, Chris Anderson, or the Charlotte Bobcats?

 byOly Sandor
Reserve guard Shannon Brown, who was a pleasant surprise in last year’s playoff, continues to make a case for regular minutes off the bench with a coast-to-coast, poster-job jam over Golden State’s Mikki Moore. Of course, Brown’s aerial antics shouldn’t surprise. The back-up table-setter threw-down on Denver’s Chris Anderson in last year’s Western Conference Finals and, back in the day (...).

Are Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks the new San Antonio Spurs?

 byOly Sandor
The Spurs seized the golfing season spotlight by trading for versatile star Richard Jefferson and signing the dependable Antonio McDyess, while the Mavericks took a more understated route, building on their strong 2009 by re-upping with point guard Jason Kidd and adding Drew Gooden and Shawn Marion. Now, in 2010, it’s Dallas, not San Antonio, who seem slept-on, overlooked and taken for (...).

LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal not enough for Cleveland to win NBA Title

 byOly Sandor
Their interest is justified. The five-man, even at 37 and rocking the ‘XXL‘, can still battle elite posts like Dwight Howard, which gives James his best opportunity at an NBA Title. Raising a banner, in turn, gives the organization its best opportunity at re-signing the reigning MVP when he hits free agency in July (...).

  2009-10 GM Predictions

 byChristopher Sells
I'm convinced that the NBA's General Managers have a pool going. They each put in five bucks (or something more substantial since they're all paid pretty well) and at the end of the year they divvy up the pot to the GM that guessed correctly most often. There has to be a reason that they vote every year on which players, rookie and teams will be the best in the league. Gambling actually is (...).

Are the Celtics better with Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce playing more minutes? ... All this and much more in another edition of best of the web, so click here (...).

Will Rose and Chicago build on their playoff run against Boston or fall off in 2010?

 byOly Sandor
A successful season hinges on the organization’s young core progressing. This process begins and ends with super-sophomore Derek Rose continuing to be Chicago’s best player since you-know-who retired and then, regrettably, unretired to join those Washington Wizards ....

Will Tyson Chandler, Ray Felton, Gerald Wallace and Charlotte finally make the playoffs in 2010?

 byOly Sandor
Owner Bob Johnson, with his penny-pinching style, has never put the resources or time into developing a credible organization. Doing things on the cheap and absenteeism from the top have always been the norm. This summer, his approach, driven by an intense desire to sell the Bobcats, had a particularly damaging impact on the organization (...).
