Top 5 Reasons Marc Gasol Is Defensive Player Of The Year.
Thursday , Apr , 25 , 2013 Daniel Henriquez

Top 5 Reasons Marc Gasol Is Defensive Player Of The Year.

Top 5 reasons Marc Gasol won the Defensive Player Of The Year.

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: The NBA chose wisely this year, didn't listen to the hype, and gave it to a truly deserving player.

Marc Gasol becamse the first Grizzlie player ever to win the Defensive Player of the Year honors receiving 212 points and 30 first-place votes.

"I'm the first European ever to accomplish this," Gasol said Wednesday. "It's really an honor. Now I think my kids will believe me when I tell them I played in the NBA."

#5 Defensive Efficiency: The Grizzlies were 2nd in the NBA in terms of defensive efficiency and their numbers were always improved when Gasol was on the court. This shows that his team is strong defensively; but that they are improved by his presence and even surrounded by great defenders he makes the difference.

#4 Defensive Rebounding: Gasol averaged 5.5 defensive rebounds a game and held opponents to 6.8 points per 100 possessions.

#3 Steals Solid: Gasol averaged 1.0 steal per game, which is impressive for a big man.

#2 Blocks Impressive. Gasol averaged 1.7 blocks per game, which was 13th in the league.

#1 Getting The Job Done: The Grizzlies take a team approach to defense. They are able to pressure on the wings more because they know they're interior defense is so strong. Gasol in the middle anchors this interior defense. The Grizzlies allowed a league-low 88.7 point per game as a result.

Pro Legends of Streetball: Connie Hawkins

How do you make the Hall of Fame playing only seven years in the NBA? If you're Connie Hawkins, you do it by dominating the ABA, the ABL, and make the most of your brief time on the big stage.  Exiled from college hoops and the NBA because of a dubious-at-best connection to a points-shaving scandal (he was neither charged nor arrested), Hawkins spent his prime years piecing together a career in the lower ranks of professional basketball.  Stints in the ABL and ABA saw him win multiple MVP awards, a championship, and a scoring title. When the NBA finally welcomed Hawkins to the fold, the NYC native didn’t disappoint, making four All-Star appearances and one All-NBA team over a seven-year span.  The Hall of Fame inducted Hawkins based on the strength of his star-crossed pro career and, many would argue, also on his legendary exploits as a streetballer.

Pro Legends of Streetball: Earl Monroe

With a name like “Black Jesus” you know he had to be good.  Also known as “The Pearl,” Earl Monroe built a storied playing career that started on the blacktops of Philadelphia and ended in the basketball Hall of Fame.  The Washington Bullets took him second overall in the 1967 NBA draft, but it was with the New York Knicks that Monroe cemented his legacy.  During his time at MSG, Earl went to two NBA All-Star Games and helped bring a championship to the world’s most famous arena.  Ask anyone who knows the history of “Black Jesus” though, and they’ll tell you that his best moments came not in the NBA, but on the outdoor courts of New York City and Philadelphia.
