Auburn names Fortner new women’s basketball coach

04.22.2004

Auburn, AL (Basketball News) - The University of Auburn named former WNBA and Olympic coach Nell Fortner as its new women’s head basketball coach on Thursday.

Fortner takes over for Joe Ciampi, who retired after 25 seasons at the helm of the Auburn program.

"I am extremely excited about the opportunity to coach at Auburn," said Fortner. "I thank the Auburn family for entrusting me with their program. Joe (Ciampi) had a tremendous career at Auburn and I am honored to follow in his footsteps. I can’t wait to get started."

During the past three seasons, Fortner was the coach and general manager of the Indiana Fever of the WNBA. She resigned from that post in September with a record of 42-56.

Fortner also guided the U.S. women’s national team to a 101-12 record from 1997-2000. She won a gold at the 1998 World Championships and another gold in the 2000 Olympics.

In 1997, Fortner led the Boilermakers to a share of the Big Ten regular season title.

"We’re pleased to welcome Nell Fortner to the Auburn family," said Hal Baird, athletic assistant to the President. "She brings outstanding credentials with her professional, Olympic and collegiate coaching experience. We believe she will be a great addition to our department, University and community."
