Zeigler takes over at Central Michigan

06.29.2006

Mount Pleasant, MI (Basketball News) - Ernie Zeigler, who helped lead UCLA to the national championship game last season, has been named the new head men’s basketball coach at Central Michigan.

The 40-year-old Zeigler had spent the last five seasons as an assistant under Ben Howland at both Pittsburgh (2002-03) and UCLA (2004-06).

"Ernie brings a wealth of experience to our program and the championship culture we are building at CMU," athletics director Dave Heeke said. "His roots are in Detroit and he has strong ties to the Midwest and the state of Michigan. Ernie is well known as one of the best recruiters in the country. His vision for our program focuses on the student-athlete and will provide an environment for our players to be successful both athletically and academically. We are thrilled to have Ernie and his family join the CMU family."

While Zeigler was at Pitt, the Panthers reached the NCAA Sweet 16 both years. The 2002 squad won a school-record 29 games while the 2003 team captured the Big East Tournament championship.

Zeigler replaces Jay Smith, who resigned May 11 with one year left on his contract.

The Chippewas finished last season with a 4-24 record. That includes a 1-17 record in the Mid-American Conference.
