Dallas, TX (Basketball News) - Antonio Anderson scored 13 points and Joey Dorsey added 12, leading Memphis to a 72-56 victory over Bucknell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the American Airlines Center.
Rodney Carney and Shawne Williams each contributed 10 points for the Tigers (32-3), who set a school record for victories in a season and will play in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1995. The previous record for wins in a season was 31, set during the school’s Final Four run in 1984-85.
Memphis, the top seed in the Oakland bracket, will next meet another underdog in Bradley on Thursday, as the 13th-seeded Braves advanced earlier in the day with an upset of Pittsburgh.
Chris McNaughton scored 15 points for Bucknell (27-5), which had beaten Arkansas in the first round on Friday. The Bison failed for the second straight year to pull off an upset in the second round of the tournament. After knocking off Kansas last year in the first round, Bucknell lost to Wisconsin in round two.
The Patriot League champs, seeded ninth this year, used deadly three-point shooting to beat Arkansas. The Bison made 11-of-21 shots from beyond the arc in that game, but managed just a 2-for-12 effort on Sunday.
Kevin Bettencourt finished his collegiate career with 12 points and fellow senior Charles Lee scored 11 in defeat, but the game changed early when Lee left the contest with two fouls.
Bucknell opened a quick 10-4 lead just over four minutes into the contest after a three-pointer by Bettencourt, but Lee soon picked up his second foul and Memphis got untracked by scoring 20 of the next 22 points.
Andre Allen keyed the run with a pair of three-pointers, the last giving the Tigers a 24-12 advantage with just under eight minutes to play in the opening half. The lead reached 31-15 before Bucknell scored the final six points to head into the break down by 10.
The Bison committed 12 turnovers in the first half and got only three points from Bettencourt. Dorsey was dominant inside for Memphis with nine points.
Bucknell pulled within eight early in the second half, but Anderson buried a three-pointer to start a 14-4 run Memphis run. The Tigers turned three steals into easy buckets during the burst, the last when Carney picked off a pass near midcourt and raced in for a slam to make it 49-31 with just over 11 minutes remaining.
The lead was 15 when Memphis head coach John Calipari was whistled for a technical foul with 8:50 to play. The Bison responded with six straight points to get as close as nine.
It was 54-43 with just over six minutes left, but Anderson and Carney each drilled three-pointers with the shot-clock winding down to extend the Tiger lead to 17.
Memphis cruised from there.
The Tigers drained 7-of-16 shots from beyond the arc and committed just nine turnovers while forcing 19 from Bucknell.
