NCAA Game Summary - Canisius at Loyola-Maryland

01.18.2004

Baltimore, MD (Basketball News) - Kevin Downey tallied a team-high 17 points as the Golden Griffins of Canisius dealt Loyola-Maryland a 66-64 setback in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action from Reitz Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for Canisius (7-10, 2-4 MAAC) was Dewitt Doss who finished with 13 points, hitting all five of his free-throw attempts as the team won for the second straight outing.

The defeat for the Greyhounds (0-16, 0-7) kept them winless on the 2003-04 campaign and extended the nation’s longest losing streak to 29 games.

Loyola’s top scorer on the afternoon was Shane James who sank all four of his three-point tries, leading to 17 points in the setback. Bernard Allen added 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists as well.

The Greyhounds took an early lead in the contest and managed to ride it to a 34-32 edge at the break. Canisius may have shot 51.9 percent from the field in the period, but Loyola made up the difference by converting 6-of-7 at the charity stripe.

In the second half the advantage for Loyola actually reached double digits at 53-42 with nine minutes to play in the contest. Unfortunately for the Greyhounds the offense went cold as Canisius ripped off a 24-11 run to take the two-point win.

Loyola’s last win came back on January 19, 2003 versus the Rider Broncs, 74-69, in overtime. The NCAA record for consecutive losses is 33, set by the Grambling Tigers from December 6, 1999 to December 16, 2000. Loyola could break the mark at home against the Manhattan Jaspers in MAAC play on February 4.

The only other team still winless this season at the Division I level is North Carolina A&T as Campbell, which entered the weekend 0-13, topped Jacksonville on Saturday, 85-73, in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
