Richmond, VA (Basketball News) - Bashir Mason drained a desperation half court shot as the buzzer sounded to lift the Drexel Dragons to a dramatic 66-64 win over the Virginia Commonwealth Rams in a Colonial Athletic Association bout at the Stuart C. Siegal Center.
The Rams took the lead with 2.7 seconds left when Renardo Dixon hit a three- pointer to put them up, 64-63. After Drexel called a timeout, Danny Hinds in- bounded the ball to Mason who dribbled twice before banking in the prayer.
Sean Brooks came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points for Drexel (6-6, 2-2 CAA). Brooks shot 6-of-10 from the field and cleared a team-best six rebounds. Hinds netted 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and Dominick Mejia chipped in 11 points in a relief role for the Dragons. Mason finished with six points.
VCU (6-7, 2-2) received 18 points from Dixon in 20 minutes off the bench. Michael Doles added 10 points in the loss.
VCU shot just 38.2 percent from the field in the first half and made just three of its 11 tries from three-point range, but the Rams still managed to take a 34-31 lead into the break.
Drexel connected on 44.4 percent of its shots in the second stanza and made 7- of-9 shots from the free throw line in the period.
