Indianapolis, IN (Basketball News) - Jeff Horner had 16 points and 10 assists to help No. 20 Iowa come from behind to upend No. 7 Ohio State, 67-60, in the Big Ten Tournament final at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Adam Haluska donated 15 points and eight rebounds while Erek Hansen and Greg Brunner chipped in 10 points apiece for Iowa (25-8), which won just its second Big 10 Tournament title in school history. The last championship came back in 2001.
Jamar Butler netted 19 points and dished out six assists for the Buckeyes (25-5), who had a seven-game win streak snapped. J.J. Sullinger added 15 points and seven boards in the loss.
Ohio State led by three at halftime and stretched its advantage to 57-52 after a Ron Lewis free throw with 7:29 remaining in the game. The Hawkeyes, though, erupted for a 12-0 spurt to claim control. Horner got things started with a triple, and Hansen followed with a tip-in bucket that knotted the game at 57-57.
Alex Thompson entered the game moments later and made an immediate impact. He assisted on Horner’s basket that put Iowa up by two, gathered a rebound at the other end and then buried a three to make it 62-57. Horner’s jumper with 2:02 left capped the charge to give the Hawkeyes a seven-point lead.
Terence Dials countered with a three-point play to move Ohio State within four but Matt Sylvester’s three-point attempt on the next trip down was off the mark, and the Hawkeyes gathered the rebound and began their march to the stripe. Iowa hit enough free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Ohio State, behind 10 points from Sullinger, claimed a 37-34 halftime edge.
Je’Kel Foster nailed consecutive three-pointers midway through the opening frame to extend the Buckeyes’ lead to 22-15. The advantage was pushed to nine following a Butler jumper with 4:15 to play, but Iowa finished the half on a 9-3 charge to trim the deficit to three.
