Washington, DC (Basketball News) - Pops Mensah-Bonsu scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead George Washington over No. 11 Michigan State, 96-83, in the BB&T Classic at the MCI Center.
T.J. Thompson added 18 points for the Colonials (4-1), who have won four straight game since falling to national powerhouse Wake Forest in the season opener.
Maurice Ager tallied 22 points for the Spartans (3-2), who dropped their second straight game after starting the season with three straight blowout victories.
George Washington will now face Maryland in the championship on Sunday, while the Spartans will battle George Mason in the consolation matchup.
George Washington shot 57 percent from the floor and forced 22 Michigan State turnovers.
The Spartans trailed 49-38 at the intermission after a 14-4 sprint to close out of the half by George Washington. Ricky Lucas highlighted the run with a pair of triples.
Michigan State got within six early in the second half, but cold get no closer as the Colonials responded with eight unanswered points to stretch the margin to 14.
The first half was close until the late run as there were 11 lead changes and seven ties.
