Columbia, MO (Basketball News) - Lanny Smith poured in 22 points as the Houston Cougars defeated the Sam Houston State Bearkats, 72-69, in the first round of the Guardians Classic at Paige Sports Arena.

Smith sank 10-of-11 free throw attempts as he led the Cougars (1-0) to victory.

Sam Houston State (0-1) was led by Othello Alford who finished with 15 points. Chris Jordan scored 10 points while Eddy Fobbs grabbed 15 rebounds and chipped in seven points for the Bearkats.

The Bearkats shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and took a 36-32 lead into the break.

Sam Houston State held a 63-53 advantage with 6:27 left in the game, but the Cougars closed out the contest with a 19-6 run to take the three-point victory.

The Bearkats will square off against the winner of the Brown/Missouri matchup on Tuesday.
