NCAA Game Summary - Virginia Commonwealth at Drexel

01.24.2004

Philadelphia, PA (Basketball News) - Jesse Pellot-Rosa caught a pass that went nearly the length of the court and converted the game-winning layup with six seconds remaining in regulation, giving the Virginia Commonwealth Rams a 70-69 victory over the Drexel Dragons in Colonial Athletic Association action from the Daskalakis Center.

Domonic Jones led the way for the Rams (12-5, 6-2 CAA) with 21 points, while Troy Godwin added 15 points and six rebounds.

Michael Doles contributed with 12 points and Pellot-Rosa finished with eight points, but none were bigger than his last two.

Tim Whitworth paced the Dragons (9-7. 4-2) in defeat with 17 points, as all five of the team’s starters registered in double figures. Phil Goss chipped in with 15 points in the losing effort, while Sean Brooks had 14 points and four blocks.

Bashir Mason knocked in 13 points and dished out a team-best five assists, while Kenell Sanchez managed to score 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field.

The lead changed hands several times in the first half of action, but it was VCU which held a slim 39-38 advantage at the break.

Drexel had a chance to win the game in the final seconds of play, but Mason could not get off a shot and the Dragons suffered the disappointing one-point defeat.

The Rams were able to shoot 44.8 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from behind the arc, helping them overcome just a 2-of-8 shooting performance at the charity stripe.
