Orlando, FL (Basketball News) - LeBron James scored 33 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers over the Orlando Magic, 114-106, at TD Waterhouse Centre.
Drew Gooden sparked a pair of fourth-quarter runs, ending with 27 points and seven boards, as the Cavaliers have won two straight and pulled one-half game ahead of the idle Philadelphia 76ers for seventh place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
"We are going through a lot of adversity," said Gooden. "We have five games left and we are still battling. We are still trying to get into the playoffs and every game is important. We have to go out there and execute."
The Cavs lead the ninth place New Jersey Nets by just two games.
Dwight Howard had 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Magic, who fell 4 1/2 games behind the Sixers with five games remaining in Orlando’s regular season. Steve Francis also had 23 points, dished out seven assists and recorded six rebounds for Orlando, which has dropped four straight and eight of 11.
"It was tough losing today," said Francis. "We turned the ball over entirely too much in today’s game and that hurt us."
Orlando shot 55 percent from the field, but committed 24 turnovers.
Leading 79-76 heading into the fourth quarter, the Cavs opened the frame with a 9-0 run to take an 88-76 advantage. Gooden had four points during the surge, capping it with a dunk at the 9:53 mark.
Orlando responded with a 10-0 burst to get within 88-86 when Francis ended the run with a layup 2 1/2 minutes later.
However, Gooden again sparked a Cleveland run, scoring four points during a 10-2 surge that gave the club a 98-88 lead with 5 1/2 minutes left. From there, the Cavs would hold off the Magic down the stretch and come away with the victory.
Robert Traylor had 20 points for the Cavs, who won the final three games of the four-game season series from Orlando. Jeff McInnis added 16 points and eight assists, as Cleveland ended a three-game road slide.
DeShawn Stevenson ended with 21 points for the Magic, who led 32-26 after one quarter but went into halftime down 59-54.
"Everybody came with their "A" game today, the whole starting lineup, the whole bench," said James, who played all 48 minutes. "We’re going to need that for the rest of the games. I was just real pleased with our effort."
