Charlotte, NC (Basketball News) - Carmelo Anthony poured in a career-high 42 points to pace the Denver Nuggets to a 101-85 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats.
Anthony shot 13-of-18 from the field and made 15-of-18 at the foul line, as the Nuggets won for the fourth time in five games. Kenyon Martin and Earl Watson each added 13 points while Andre Miller totaled 11 points and 11 assists for Denver. Marcus Camby had 10 points in the win, as Denver finished the game with a 21-3 run.
It marked the second 40-point game for Anthony within a week. He also had 40 points in a 100-92 victory at Miami on Friday.
"Coach (George) Karl was getting on my case earlier," Anthony said. "He said I needed to rebound, play defense and pass the ball better to give us the best chance to win. I was 13-for-18 from the field, so I’ll take that any day."
Emeka Okafor finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds for Charlotte, which lost its eighth consecutive contest. Kareem Rush and Sean May each added 13 points while Brevin Knight had a game-high 16 assists for the Bobcats, who committed a season-high 26 turnovers.
"The losing streak is nothing new," said Bobcats head coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "We kind of got acclimated to that last year. What we have to do is find a way to get out of it."
Denver outscored Charlotte 29-11 in the fourth quarter en route to the win.
A May jumper gave the Bobcats an 82-80 edge with 7:58 remaining, but Denver scored the next 12 points. Watson’s three-pointer gave the Nuggets an 83-82 edge, and Eduardo Najera and Anthony both followed with jumpers, with Anthony’s coming from three-point range. Watson added a dunk and Anthony’s two free throws made it 92-82 with 4:57 left.
The Nuggets carried a 26-20 lead into the second quarter and were in front 49-44 at the half. Denver led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, as Anthony’s jumper made it 72-62 with 2:26 remaining. However, the Bobcats close the period with 12 consecutive points. Keith Bogans had six of those points.
