San Antonio, TX (Basketball News) - Manu Ginobili scored 15 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, and the San Antonio Spurs claimed Game 1 of the NBA Finals with an 84-69 victory over Detroit on Thursday.
Ginobili rattled off six straight points late in the fourth to halt a 10-0 Detroit run that had rallied the Pistons back from a 17-point deficit. Tim Duncan added 24 points and 17 rebounds in the win, despite consistent defensive pressure from Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace.
Chauncey Billups had 25 points and six assists to lead the Pistons. Richard Hamilton scored 14 — but only four after the first quarter.
That was the story of the game for Detroit, which jumped out to a big lead early before cooling off over the final three quarters.
Game 2 of this best-of-seven series is scheduled for Sunday.
