Pondexter named WNBA Player of Week Biography

Pondexter, who earned her first Player of the Week honor just three weeks into her professional career, averaged 28.5 points, shooting 23-of-38 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free throw line. She led the Mercury, 0-4 prior to the week, to consecutive wins for the first time since August 2005.

In a 90-76 win over Sacramento on June 6, Pondexter tallied 30 points for the second straight time to become just the third player in WNBA history to notch back-to-back 30-point games (Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes). The game also featured the tandem of Pondexter and Diana Taurasi becoming the first teammates in league history to score 30 points apiece in the same game.

Pondexter’s scoring average of 23.7 points per game leads the league, followed by Taurasi’s 23.0 ppg.

Other candidates for the award were Charlotte’s Tangela Smith, Connecticut’s Katie Douglas, Detroit’s Cheryl Ford, Minnesota’s Nicole Ohlde and Seimone Augustus, Sacramento’s Yolanda Griffith and Washington’s Alana Beard.
