Taurasi leads Mercury over Monarchs

Sacramento, CA (Basketball News) - Diana Taurasi had 26 points and dished out eight assists as the Phoenix Mercury topped the Sacramento Monarchs, 74-70, at ARCO Arena.

Cappie Pondexter added 16 points and Penny Taylor had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Mercury, who have won two straight following a three-game skid.

Rebekkah Brunson poured in 17 points and had a career-high 17 rebounds for Sacramento, which had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Monarchs had not suffered defeat since a 76-75 setback in Phoenix on May 29.

Nicole Powell chipped in with 10 points for Sacramento, which shot just 34.8 percent (24-of-69) in the contest.

The Mercury, who are not known for their defensive prowess, allowed a 72-64 lead to slip away in the game’s final minutes, before Kelly Miller drained a pair of free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining to seal the win.
