McConnell-Serio resigned as the head coach of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx last July while in her fourth season. She posted a record of 58-67, leading the franchise to its first two playoff appearances in 2003 and ’04.
"I’m excited to be the head coach at Duquesne University," McConnell-Serio said. "Pittsburgh is my home and Duquesne is a great fit for me and my family. I got my start in the Atlantic 10 as a player and I’m eager to be part of the A-10 as a coach."
A Pittsburgh native, McConnell-Serio was a first-team All-America at Penn State [the school was in the Atlantic 10 Conference at the time] in 1988 and played for a pair of United States Olympic teams. She played for the Cleveland Rockers of the WNBA for three seasons and spent 13 years as a successful high school coach, compiling a record of 321-86 at Pittsburgh’s Oakland Catholic.
"Suzie McConnell-Serio has been synonymous with success at every level as both a player and coach," said Duquesne athletic director Greg Amodio. "She experienced great success in the Atlantic 10 as a player at Penn State and we look for her to do the same as a head coach."
