Brooks led last season’s squad to a 27-6 record and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1995-96, and has compiled a 98-52 mark overall. "As an athletics and university staff we have a tremendous appreciation for what Coach Brooks has achieved while leading our women’s basketball program," James Madison athletics director Jeff Bourne said. "His team is extremely competitive within the Colonial Athletic and made its presence felt at the national level during the 2006-07 season. We expect continued success from his program and feel he is an ideal individual for this role."

He was a part-time assistant coach for the 1993-94 CAA-champion Dukes, and was an assistant at Virginia Military Institute from 1994-98 and at Madison again from 1998-2002 prior to taking over the women’s team the following year.
