Streaking Phoenix advance to second round

Hartford, CT (Basketball News) - Nicole Soulis finished with 15 points and four steals, leading the ninth-seeded Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix to a 59-52 win over the eighth-seeded New Mexico Lobos in first-round action of the NCAA Women’s Tournament at the Hartford Civic Center.

Amanda Popp tallied 14 points and five rebounds for the Phoenix (29-3), who extended the nation’s second-longest winning streak to 26 games. Natalie Berglin finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Katie Montgomery and Julie Briody scored 11 points apiece for New Mexico (24-9), while Dionne Marsh finished with 10.

UW-Green Bay shot just 39.1 percent from the floor and went 2-of-11 from three-point range in the first half, yet the Phoenix trailed by only a 29-26 halftime margin.

The Phoenix opened the second half with a 20-5 run en route to the seven-point victory.

UW-Green Bay awaits the winner of the Connecticut/UMBC game for a second-round matchup in the Fresno region on Tuesday.
