Washington State’s Daugherty recovering after cardiac arrest

05.23.2007

Pullman, WA (Basketball News) - Washington State women’s head basketball coach June Daugherty is recovering after suffering a cardiac arrest on Tuesday afternoon.

Daugherty, who was hired to direct the Cougar women’s basketball program April 20, had arrived at an Everett medical clinic for a scheduled physical examination when the cardiac arrest occurred. Personnel at the clinic attended to her and she was then taken to the Everett Providence Medical Center.

As of late Wednesday morning local time, Daugherty was listed in serious condition by hospital personnel.

"June is doing as well as can be expected," said her husband and Cougars associate head coach Mike Daugherty. "We appreciate all those who have expressed their concerns and appreciate their prayers. Right now we request that everyone respect the privacy of our family."

According to Mike Daugherty, June’s condition was not described as a heart attack, no blockage was found and there are no anticipated long term issues at this time. No specific time table for her recovery has been made by the medical personnel attending June.

"We are all very concerned for June, Mike, Breanne, Doc and the entire family and we continue to hold them up in our prayers," WSU Athletics Director Jim Sterk said Wednesday. "We are relieved June is feeling better and her status has been upgraded today. June is a very special person who already has won the hearts and support of the Cougar nation and I know they also are keeping her and her family in their prayers."

June Daugherty was named head coach of the Cougars on April 20. She spent the past 11 seasons at Washington, compiling a 191-139 record. The Huskies’ best season under Daugherty came in 2001, when the team won the their first Pac-10 Conference title in over a decade and reached the NCAA Regional Final.
