Basketball rules -
OUT OF BOUNDS. A player causes the ball to be put in play from out of bounds when the player touches all or any part of the boundary line. This is an automatic forfeit of possession. If a player loses control of the ball and it touches any part of the boundary line or the ceiling or equipment that might be hanging from the ceiling, it produces an immediate throw-in situation for the opponents. A similar throw-in situation develops if the ball touches a player already out of bounds. THE THROW-IN. Any player of the team in control may make the throw-in. Only a designated thrower-in may be out of bounds. The player making the throw-in has five seconds to release the ball to a player inbounds. The thrower-in cannot leave the designated area nor score a field goal from out of bounds, and opponents are restrained from harassing the effort by being required not to cross the out-of-bounds boundary or its vertical plane. When a team has the ball under its opponent's basket for a throw-in, if they call a time out does the throw-in spot change? (ie: Does the throw-in move to the sideline after a time out?) report abuse

No, the throw-in spot won't change, at least not in high school or college ball. However, if a team retains the ability to run the end line after a make does change. If they call the timeout BEFORE they step out of bounds to inbound the ball, they can still run the baseline. If they go out of bounds and grab the ball and then call a time out, they'll have to throw in from that same spot. report abuse

I know that if a team can have as many players as it wants out of bounds on the end line before the ball is inbounded and they're all legal to touch the ball. I would imagine that if the ball was dead it wouldn't matter where they were, they could come in and be legal. report abuse

Can a player throwing the ball in take a few steps left-to-right no matter where the throw-in occurrs? This would be for a high school team. I heard this rule changed a few years ago but wanted to be sure. report abuse

I believe if a player is out of bounds he becomes an extention of the out of bounds. The ball is called out on the last ( in bounds player ) that touched it. report abuse

In high school rules, can’t a player jump out of bounds with the ball after an opponent scores and instead of throwing it directly in bounds throw it to a team mate who is further down the baseline out of bounds? . But if the ball is being in bounded for a reason other than because the opponent scored, this is disallowed...Correct? Would the ball then be awarded to the opposing team at the same spot? report abuse

the answer to the question from celine duran: This is a play that the wvu coach bob huggins used a couple years ago when wvu played georgetown. They were allowed to do this because it wasn't a dead ball situation. After a made shot the opposing team can run the baseline. this means they can move side to side down the baseline to inbound it, and as long as the recipient of the out of bounds to out of bounds pass is fully established out, they can throw the bal to each other and then proceed to inbound it. when it is a dead ball situation if the inbounders feet move than the punishment is a change of possesion, so you can't use this play under those circumstances. Also, i have a question that occured in a game i just recently played in. My team reached across the line and touched the ball when the opposing team was inbounding it, and he was respectively awarded with a technical foul. the other team got 2 free throws and the ball. the refs awarded them the ball at half-court, but my coach argued that the ball should be inbounded at the spot where the technical foul occured which was under their basket on the baseline. i think the refs were correct, but my coach has a lot of experience so i'm not sure. I can't find the answer online. i'll keep looking report abuse

Question - Offensive player with the ball looses control of the ball - ball stays in bounds but the same offensive player goes out of bounds without touching the ball and then comes back on the court and regains possession of the ball. Is this legal or should the ball be declared out and awarded to the other team? report abuse
