The Punch [Video Demonstration]

Move Type: Game

Tip: Positioning of the ball is key. It must be placed close enough to the defender that they attempt to take it, but not so close that they can reach it before you do.

Notes: The original version of this move was invented by Rory "Disaster" Grace, who finished the trick by knocking the ball between the defender's legs with his fist. This is what gave rise to the name "The Punch".

The Blessing [Video Demonstration]

This move can be performed while dribbling with either hand, but we’ll assume that the right is being used. While fairly simple, anyone who has seen it will tell you how stylish it looks.

  1. Dribble low and fast until your defender crouches down.

  1. Straighten up and put your left hand on top of their head.

  1. With your right, dribble the ball behind your back to receive the ball in your right again.

The Shammgod [Video Demonstration]

An old streetball favourite, this move is said to have been invented by God Shammgod. Used on its own or in combination with other moves, it's always useful for creating space between you and your defender.

The Sideboard [Video Demonstration]

You may have seen this trick performed by A.O., and it’s a real beauty if you can get it right. The move is far easier if you have a padded backboard, as many metal boards found on street courts are too thin.

  1. Dribble down the right-hand side of the court, towards the block.

  1. Perform a counter-clockwise spin move so that you end up with your right foot nearly touching the baseline.

  1. Take a hook-shot as if you are aiming to score, but throw the ball off the side of the board so that it returns to your hands. The defender should turn to look for the rebound.

  1. Catch the ball and continue as desired.

Put It In The Air [Video Demonstration]

This move truly is a classic, and can be seen being carried out by Hot Sauce in several of the mixtapes.

  1. With your defender close, fake the ball over their head so that you are holding it behind their neck.

  1. Throw it straight up in the air and run a few paces to one side. The defender will follow you.

  1. Return to your original spot to retrieve the ball.

Hardaway Crossover [Video Demonstration]

Chris Childs knows how hard this crossover can be to guard having had his ankles broken with it on more than occasion thanks to Tim Hardaway. Despite being the simplest of the set in terms of total movements, the fake has to be sold properly if it's to be of any use.
