Arizona’s wild win ends Washington’s home win streak

12.31.2005

Seattle, WA (Basketball News) - Hassan Adams scored 32 points and Kirk Walters hit the eventual game-winning free throw in the final seconds, as Arizona snapped the longest home-winning streak in the country by edging seventh- ranked Washington, 96-95, in double-overtime at Bank of America Arena.

Adams went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and finished with five rebounds and four steals for the Wildcats (9-3, 2-0 PAC 10), who improved to 3-1 on the road. Mustafa Shakur chipped in 23 points and dished out nine assists, while Marcus Williams tallied 16 points and collected nine rebounds in the win.

Brandon Roy tied a career-high with 35 points for the Huskies, including two three-pointers in the final moments of both regulation and the first overtime to extend the game. Jamaal Williams added 22 points and seven boards for Washington (11-1, 1-1) which lost at home for the first time in 33 games.

"There have been a lot of good teams on that 32-game home winning streak, and another one came in here and took it from us," Roy said. "It is the only way it should end, it shouldn’t end with us losing by 15 or us losing to a bad team. We lost our home streak with a good team, and I think this was a good way to go out if we had to."

Arizona and Washington traded blows in the early stages of overtime before Adams nailed a trey with 1:28 left that put the Wildcats up, 88-85. Bobby Jones answered with a layup to cut the lead to one, but Shakur made both of his free throw attempts with five seconds left to put Arizona back up by three.

Roy, however, took the ball to the left corner, pump-faked, stepped through two defenders and then sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into double-overtime.

The showdown went into the final minute of double-OT knotted at 94-94. Marcus Williams drew a foul with 54 ticks left and made 1-of-2 to put Arizona up by one, and Jamaal Williams followed suit by hitting 1-of-2 at the other end to tie the game once again.

The Wildcats took over and wound down the clock before J.P. Price shot a mid- range jumper that rimmed out. Walters grabbed the rebound, though, and was fouled on his putback attempt with five seconds left. He hit one of his two tries from the stripe to make it a 96-95 Arizona edge.

Washington was forced to take a long-distance three as time ran out that air- balled.

"That was a great college game," said Arizona head coach Lute Olson. "Great competitors on the court. Brandon Roy was unbelievable, as was Hassan Adams. I think that the Pac-10 Office is going to have to break tradition, and name co- players of the week. If neither one of those two players doesn’t get it, then something is wrong."

Arizona trailed by 13 points at intermission but slowly chipped away in the second half, and used a 15-5 run late in the frame to draw even at 69-69. Marcus Williams had five points in the charge, including a jumper with 4:31 to play that evened the score.

The Wildcats took their first lead of the game seconds later on a pair of free throws by Chris Rodgers. On their next possession, Shakur’s alley-oop feed dropped in with no assistance, and Adams followed with a jumper that capped a 10-0 surge and put Arizona up 75-69 with 2:22 remaining.

The Huskies, though, finished regulation with a 12-6 run to tie the game. Adams had a chance to put the game away with 15 seconds left, but he made just 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Roy came down the other end, surveyed, and then launched a three from the top of the arc that swished in with 5.6 seconds on the clock. Arizona had one last chance to win it in regulation, but took too long on its final possession and did not get a shot off.

Washington took a 40-27 halftime lead thanks to a 10-0 run to end the frame. Justin Dentmon followed Williams’ layup with a jumper to put the Huskies up, 34-27, with just under two minutes to play.

Ryan Appleby took over from there, nailing a pair of three-pointers in the closing seconds to push the lead to 13.
