How to Measure Your Vertical Leap

Although various methods are used to gauge different types of leaping ability, the standard measure of a player’s vertical jump can be obtained by following the steps below.

1. Stand with your side to a wall and have someone mark off the highest point you can reach while flat-footed.

2. Cover the underside of the tip of your middle finger in ink.

3. Move one step back from the first mark (that of your reach).

4. Without taking more than a step into it, jump off of both feet and touch the highest point possible on the wall.

5. Repeat this five times.

6. Measure the heights of your standing reach and the highest point you touched on the wall.

7. Subtract your standing reach from the height of the highest point you touched on the wall. The number you find is your vertical jump.

For example, if your standing reach is seven feet, and the highest point you touch on the wall is ten feet, your vertical jump will be three feet (thirty-six inches).

im 5’ 8 1/2’’ i am doing the vertical project which is the most appraised program, but i’m taking a break because it made my knees and lower back really sore but for the last 3 weeks every day during practice i would try to grab the rim at least 50 times a practice since then i can do a lay-up and then grab the rim.. some people call it a dunk but im not satisfied... any tips? .

I’m 5’7 1/2 170 lbs. My reach is 7’1 and I can jump 43 inches. I’ve never done a vertical jump program for longer than 3 weeks...do yall think i could still gain up to 6 inches if I stay committed for the next 10 or so weeks? How many could I gain, potentially?

Increasing your vertical requires training your fast twitch muscle fibers in legs and using proper body mechanics to generate upward momentum. Training is easily done through plyometrics (google it). Box jumps and sprints are invaluable exercices. Squats will increase your mean strength, but unless your doing explosive movements with the weight it won’t impact your vertical much. Increasing your thrust (strength) and decreasing your drag (weight) are key elements as far as training goes. Second is jump mechanics. You want to smothly transfer forward motion into upward motion. In volleyball and basketball you do this through an approach and arm swing. By planting the feet at take off and swinging the upper body you transfer momentum from a horizontal plane to the vertical plane, effectively reducing your drag (weight) enabling you to jump higher. .

im 17 and 6 ft and i have a pretty weak 19.5 inch verticle. ive figured out that to dunk from standstill with one hand i need to have a 28 inch verticle. is it possible to increase by about 10 or is that just not going to happen physically. AND if so what are some key basic things i MUST do???thanks very much .

Hi, I’m Nick O I’m currently 15 and I want to be the first person on my b-ball team to be able to dunk. Also how effective specifically is Bionic Plyometrics.. I’m 6’1 and play the powerforward position and I’m wondering if I will be able to dunk on a fastbreak, and out of post position by completing this program. My Veritcal jump is 16 inches, yeah I know I don’t jump high, mainly because playing high-school football has worn down my legs. I heard that squats contribute to your verical jump, and I weigh 210 pounds, and squat 250 max, but this number is changing about every week. Also how many inches are necessary to throw it down? (dunk a basketball). I currently have 30 dollars to spend and I need a program that will ensure me that I will be dunking by April. Which veritcal program will ensure the fatest reults in my price range? Also do the SpringBack Insoles work because I considering buying them My goal is around 33 to 34 inches. Thank YouYour reply will be greattly appreciatedNick O. .

hi, id like to just say that when your young not to try doing any jump training, im one of those unfortunate kids who got injured badly.I know its one of those ’not going to happen to me things’because i did the training finely, it was just the final result.I was only 12 years old when i did this training, i could dunk a few months before my 13th birthday.but then a few months ago what happened was my muscles were stronger than my bones, and what would have a been a hamstring tear or pull turned into the hamstring ripping the bone off my pelvis.i say go for it if you want the vertical, but try to go easy if your growing rapidly at the time. and always stretch and plyo’s only work when you are tired at the time. .
