Redick isn’t the only new record-holder

There are numerous articles about J.J. Redick breaking the NCAA record for most three-pointers. This is not one of them.

Instead, I’ve decided to write about another amazing record in college basketball.Northwestern College’s Deb Remmerde’s hit 133 straight free throws — the longest in organized basketball history. Last week, she beat the record of 126 set by high-schooler Daryl Moreau of New Orleans De La Salle in 1978-79.She long ago destroyed the NCAA record of 69, set by Jamie Visness of Concordia-Moorhead in 2002-03.Not even an NBA player has come close to her. Ninety-four was the best for the league, set by Michael Williams in 1993.But Remmerde can do much more than shoot free-throws. She’s ranked second in the nation in scoring, averaging 31.1 points. If I’m not mistaken, that’s about four more than Adam Morrison and J.J. Redick. Its apparent that this streak wasn’t one of pure luck. When he sophomore Iowan appeared on “The Early Show” on CBS, she quelled any doubts by hitting 580 of 585 foul shots. Within those, she had a 256-shot streak going. A rumor from her team is that she’s made 485 in a row during practice. Oh, but wait. It gets better. Not only can she drain them from the foul-line, but she leads her the Great Plains Athletic Conference in three-pointers and defensive rebounds. So why is she not more well-know? It could be because the GPAC is a Division II conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. But perhaps the better question is why is she only at the D-II level? I think she could hold her own against Division I schools.
