Wednesday’s college hoops round-up

Let’s start with the Connecticut game. I like Rudy Gay. I like him a lot. The UConn forward dropped a double-double on Syracuse last night leading his team to a 73-50 demolition of the Orange. Twenty-two points, 13 rebounds, two steals. Not bad.

 

Of course, when your 6-10 center contributes 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks as well, I think it’s safe to assume that few, if any, opponents could keep up. Syracuse not only had to contend with Gay and Boone’s individual shows, but struggled on their own with shooting. Going 22-69 and 3 for 26 from 3-point range, the Orange hit a season-low percentage. Plus they were out-rebounded 50-35 and had ten of their shots blocked. Your typical rout.

 

Then we move to the SEC where South Carolina shocked No. 6 Florida 71-67. Not only did Florida lose, but they lost at home, ending the second-longest home winning streak in the nation at 20 games. The Gamecocks hit 10 3-pointers in a game dominated by outside shots. Florida didn’t experience the same amount of luck, though, as Taurean Green’s 3-point shot was blocked by South Carolina’s Brandon Wallace to deny the Gator’s their last chance to tie the game. Ouch.

 

And finally, the ACC. Herb Sendek, if you’re reading this, take notes. For the sake of your fans and any other sane spectator watching from their TV, sit Engin Atsur down. PLEASE!! He is NOT GOOD!!! With players like Cedric Simmons and Cameron Bennerman, State should be dominating a lot of teams, not just edging by. After relinquishing a 15-point lead, the Wolfpack needed to overtimes to recover and beat Miami. Sendek feels insulted when people accuse him of running a Princeton-style offense, yet he continues to do it. Why, I ask you, why? Make use of your talent Mr. Sendek.

 

Alright, my headaches are becoming unbearable at this point. All that ranting made it worse.
