NCAA three-point line may be moving back

05.3.2007

Indianapolis, IN (Basketball News) - The Men’s Basketball Rules Committee voted to extend the three-point line to 20 feet, nine inches on Thursday, a jump of one foot. Subject to the approval of the Playing Rules Oversight Panel on May 25, the rule change would go into effect in the 2008-09 season.

"We believe this alteration will provide more space between the perimeter players and the post players," said Larry Keating, chair and senior associate athletics director at the University of Kansas. "There has been a tremendous amount of data collection and discussion on this issue and we believe this is the best option for the game and its future."

The 19-foot, nine-inch line was implemented for the 1986-87 season.

"Since the three-point line was implemented, the game has changed," said Keating. "The student-athletes are bigger and stronger and we need to adjust for that."

The Women’s Basketball Rules Committee did not vote for a similar change, and will maintain the same 19-foot, nine-inch distance.
