07.3.2007

Providence, RI (Basketball News) - Legendary Providence basketball star Jimmy Walker, the first overall selection in the 1967 NBA Draft, passed away on Monday after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 63.

Walker averaged 25.2 points per game in three seasons at Providence and was named to the Associated Press All-American team in all three years, including a First-Team selection in 1967. Walker averaged over 30 points per game that season to lead the nation.

Walker was the school’s all-time points-scored leader with 2,045 before Ryan Gomes surpassed that total in 2005. He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the top pick in 1967. In nine NBA seasons, Walker averaged 16.7 points per game.
