Charles Barkley

Video: Evans and Love win Dunk and 3-point contests, but do you care?

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Does anybody care that Jeremy Evans and Kevin Love are your 2012 Slam Dunk and Three Point Shootout champions?

Of course, not.

In fact, the highlight of All-Star Saturday was TNT broadcaster Charles Barkley throwing zingers at past and present players.

Barkley's best moment was calling out current superstars for choosing to skip the Slam Dunk Contest, which has long been All-Star Saturday’s showcase event.

After all, Blake Griffin decided not to defend his 2011 Slam Dunk Title. And LeBron James again talked of participating but ultimately spent the night with teammate Dwyane Wade on the sideline.

So watch the videos below and get at HoopsVibe News with thoughts on All-Star Saturday.

Charles Barkley: Kentucky Wildcats could beat Toronto Raptors

Charles Barkley offered his bit of infinite wisdom on how good the Wildcats are. His prognosis? They are good enough to beat the Toronto Raptors. But the Charlotte Bobcats? Not so much.

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: The Kentucky Wildcats are talented, but not that talented.

Sure, the Wildcats - led by the great Anthony Davis - have five or six talented pieces that will play in the NBA. And sure, these Wildcats could win the NCAA tournament.

Here’s the thing: the Toronto Raptors, despite sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, are loaded with talented pieces. Every player on their roster was either a blue-chip college piece, a prep-to-pro stud, or a Euro’ super prospect.

So there’s no way the Wildcats, as talented as they are, could beat the Raptors.

Video: Kobe Bryant hits buzzer-beater, despite missing first 15 shots

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Charles Barkley once said the difference between good and great is confidence.

Who is more confident than the great Kobe Bryant?

Last night, he missed his first fifteen attempts from the floor but still took and made the game-winning three-pointer to beat the determined New Orleans Hornets last night at Staples Center.

Click the video below and watch Bryant go to work on Jarrett Jack.

Charles Barkley: Dallas Mavericks shouldn`t pay Lamar Odom

“I like Lamar as a person, but I’m disappointed about everything that happened in Dallas. And it’s a shame that the Mavs got to pay him, to be honest with you. He don’t deserve to get paid for what he put out there this year. He doesn’t deserve it, plain and simple.”

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: So where does it end?

According to Charles Barkley, the Dallas Mavericks shouldn’t have to pay Lamar Odom because he did nothing for the defending world champions.

Well, should the New York Knicks ask for a refund from Eddy Curry? Or, how about the Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards with Gilbert Arenas? Do you think the Detroit Pistons would want a re-do on Charlie Villanueva’s three-year, $24 million pact?

Look on every NBA team’s roster and you’ll find a bad contract or two. And bad contracts have always been a part of David Stern’s league because the union was smart enough to make sure those bad contracts were guaranteed.

But Odom will get his. He’ll likely end up a free agent this summer when the Mavericks buy out the final year of his contract this June.

And who will want an emotional power forward with more baggage than his Hollywood socialite wife?

Odom`s wallet will take a hit. He may get the mini mid level exception this summer, which would be a $5 million reduction in salary.

There's Only One "Dream Team", Sorry Kobe- Just Ask My Starting Lineup Figurines

Can you believe it’s been 20 years since the original Dream Team dominated the 1992 Summer Olympics? It must've been that long if Kobe thinks this year's incarnation would have ANY SHOT against them.

HoopsVibe Very Quick Call: There will never be another Dream Team, in any sport.

Perhaps even more amazingly, can you believe that in all that time that I have maintained my collection of Starting Lineup Dream Team figurines in its original box, unopened and untouched by human hands? On a trip to a local Target with my step mother, I conned her into buying it for me; $100 when you're twelve feels like $1,000,000. It was the kind of gift you could only secure via guilt. It was the sort of reverse psychology that women have been employing on me ever since.

I remember one time in 8th grade during my 13th birthday party it was discovered by a party goer named Eric Hoffman who spent at least two hours prying me to open it. It was the ultimate peer pressure situation, but I held firm. It turns out I should’ve probably opened it because since then it’s appreciated roughly $20 in nearly 20 years. But every time I see it, I remember how special that team was, even though Clyde Drexler and Christian Laettner, as late additions, were not included in the set.

Did you know that Laettner was actually selected over Shaquille O’Neal for the final spot? We all saw what Charles Barkley did to that Angolan; imagine what Shaq could’ve done. The Dream Team beat their opponents in the Olympics that year by an average score of 44 points a game and looked so cool doing it.

The closest margin of victory was a 32 point win over Croatia which included NBA players Toni Kukoc, Dino Radja, Drazen Petrovic, Stojko Vrankovic and Zan Tabak. Croatia won the Silver Medal and led by all that talent, ushered in a new era for the NBA where overseas players began to be viewed as valuable as their American counterparts. Today you can look at almost every NBA roster and find a player from another country, but in 1992 it was extremely rare.

Michael Jordan was the only player to start all eight games which really speaks to how great he was. Even surrounded by all those Alpha Males, there was no question who the top dog was. Jordan took 30 more shots than anyone else, but Barkley was the leading scorer putting up 18 ppg. Just in case anyone forgot, check out this roster; it would be akin to playing a game against the Hall of Fame as 11 of the players (minus Laettner) are actually in the Hall of Fame:

Michael Jordan- 14.9 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 4.8 apg
David Robinson- 9.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 0.9 apg
Patrick Ewing- 9.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg. 0.4 apg
Larry Bird- 8.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.8 apg
Scottie Pippen- 9.0 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 5.9 apg
Clyde Drexler- 10.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.6 apg
Karl Malone- 13.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.1 apg
John Stockton- 2.8 ppg, 0.3 rpg, 2.0 apg
Chris Mullin- 12.9 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 3.6 apg
Charles Barkley- 18 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.4 apg
Magic Johnson- 8.0 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 5.5 apg
Christian Laettner- 4.8 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 0.4 apg

Since the original Dream Team won Gold, the rest of the world gradually caught up and no other US Olympic team was even close to being as dominant. In what can only be described as an affront to the supreme quality of the original (and only, in my mind) Dream Team is that each of the next two USA Olympic teams were also referred as the “Dream Team” though really, who are they fooling? A team with Steve Smith on it should never be referred to as a “Dream Team”. A more suitable moniker would be “Team of Guys Who Are Above Average NBA Players”.

The Dream Team wasn't just the greatest team ever assembled for the way it dominated on the court, but it actually furthered the development of the sport for the entire world.

Sorry, Kobe.

Today In NBA History 1995-96: Barkley, Olajuwon Pull Down 10,000th Rebounds

17 and 18 years ago today, Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon joined the exclusive 10,000 rebound club.

HoopsVibe Very Quick Call: Weren't those Rockets uniforms terrible at that time?

The only thing worse was the huge rocket they had at half court, that covered literally, about  half of the court.

Barkley's 10,000th rebound came during his last season in Phoenix in the first quarter of a victory over the Grizzlies on February 19th, 1996. Having already scored 20,000 points in his career, he became just the 10th NBA player to accumulate 20,000 points and 10,000 rebounds. Barkley finished his career with the 18th most rebounds in NBA history, with 12,546. Amazingly for his career, Barkley never averaged less than double digit rebounds per season, ever. He truly was "The Round Mound Of Rebound." Throw in his assist totals and Barkley is one of just four players with 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists, with Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone being the other three.

Olajuwon finished 11th all-time with a total of 13,748. He accomplished the feat a year earlier, during a nine rebound performance over the Knicks on February 19th, 1995 and it made him the ninth player in NBA history to crack the 20,000 point/10,000 rebound plateau.

In all the years of NBA action, only 16 players have collected 20,000 points and 10,000 rebounds (active players in bold):

  1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - 38,387 points & 17,440 rebounds
  2. Karl Malone - 36,928 points & 14,698 rebounds
  3. Wilt Chamberlain - 31,419 points & 23,924 rebounds
  4. Shaquille O'Neal - 28,255 points & 12,921 rebounds
  5. Moses Malone - 27,409 points & 16,212 rebounds
  6. Elvin Hayes - 27,313 points & 16,279 rebounds
  7. Hakeem Olajuwon - 26,946 points & 13,748 rebounds
  8. Patrick Ewing - 24,815 points & 11,607 rebounds
  9. Charles Barkley - 23,757 points & 12,546 rebounds
  10. Robert Parish - 23,334 points & 14,715 rebounds
  11. Elgin Baylor - 23,149 points & 11,463 rebounds
  12. Kevin Garnett - 22,267 points & 12,188 rebounds
  13. Walt Bellamy - 20,941 points & 14,241 rebounds
  14. Bob Pettit - 20,880 points & 12,849 rebounds
  15. David Robinson - 20,790 points & 10,497 rebounds
  16. Tim Duncan - 20,641 points & 11,335 rebounds

Chuck and Hakeem joined some esteemed company 17 and 18 years ago today.

How Dangerous is Blake Griffin?

I’m not talking about Javaris Crittenton dangerous. It’s more like “scary player can dominate the NBA like Jordan” dangerous. The kid right now is already in many people’s top ten lists. Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Tim Duncan, and Shawn Kemp were not THIS explosive. They were not this good early in their careers. Griffin is so good that I had to acknowledge that he might be a future triple double factory in this piece. Barkley: Kobe Shouldn’t Risk Playing Overseas

“No I don’t think Kobe Bryant is going to Turkey. Kobe Bryant, I want to get my numbers right, but I think he has three years and 83 million dollars, so could you imagine him going to Turkey or China for a couple of million dollars and blowing an Achilles or knee out? When you have 83 million dollars coming in the next three years, first of all you should already be financially set, but that’s too much to risk. You can’t risk that money playing overseas.”

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Will Kobe Bryant play in China during the NBA lockout? Or, will he stay state-side?

Everyone has an opinion, including Hall of Fame power forward and TNT broadcaster Charles Barkley, who believes Bryant has 83 million reasons to avoid China and remain in America.

Barkley believes The Black Mamba would be silly to risk injury playing in a foreign league and potentially compromise the remaining three years and $83 million on his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

After all, in China he’d reportedly pull in between $1-2 per month, however, there’s the possibility of tearing an Achilles or blowing out a knee.

Even with insurance such an injury would complicate the term and money on his lucrative pact with the purple-and-gold.

So perhaps Bryant rests until the lockout is settled -whenever that is.

Fighting out of the red corner, wearing the black and yellow of the Cheshire Jets of the United Kingdom, tipping the scales at 250 pounds, Ron ‘Metta World Peace’ Artest.

Jokes aside, Shaq isn’t really fighting Artest (not that we know of, at least). However, the newest addition to TNT’s broadcast booth named a few NBA players he’d like to fight as part of an interview for an MMA magazine.

Artest was the only current player to make the cut. The others are old school: Danny Ainge, Charles Barkley, Xavier McDaniel, and Charles Oakley.

An MMA spectacle between Shaq and Artest would be far better than the other option: a battle on the mic’ between these two very mediocre rappers.

LeBron James Fails With Tim Tebow-Gate

Tim Tebow will succeed in the NFL. He’s a hard worker, a student of the game, a natural born leader and most of all a WINNER! It takes time and he’ll be nice.

Listened to Merril Hoge today on SC and he was just blasting Tebow. The man hasn’t even play a full season and its only his 2nd year in.

Guys get on that TV and act like they was all WORLD when they played. How bout encouraging him and wishing him the best instead of hating!!

(LeBron James, twitter)

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Wrong again LeBron.

Last I checked media analysts aren’t paid to pick up pom-poms and cheer for those they cover. That’s what teams pay cheerleaders for.

(By the way, can you imagine Sir Charles, Shaq, or Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith working the sideline of a Miami Heat-Boston Celtics game? Not a pretty picture!)

Media analysts are paid to analyze. Hopefully, their analysis sparks a reaction, whether good or bad, from the public.

Merril Hoge was doing what ESPN pays him to do: analyze. Best of all, his analysis on Denver quarterback Tim Tebow struck a chord and got a reaction from arguably the biggest name in sports (that would be you, LeBron)!

I get the feeling this isn’t about Hoge or Tebow, though. This is more about James being peeved at the media for panning his play and behaviour in 2010-11 with the Miami Heat.

On the one hand, James had a superb year for the Heat, and established himself as the best player on a team that transcended sport. Perhaps he deserved better from the insiders and analysts.

On the other hand, James did not meet the expectation he set, and, according to some, fell short in the NBA Finals. The media called James on this, which, wait for it, sparked a reaction.

James has every right to speak his mind. So speak it. Put it out there if the media has been unfair to you.

Just don’t use Hoge, Tebow, or anyone else as cover for what you want to say!

Shaq on LeBron backlash: 'it happened' to Jordan, Rodman, Barkley, and Magic

“I would not characterize it as unfair because like I said, it happened to everyone. It happened to (Michael) Jordan when he went to Atlantic City to get away from the game. It happened to Barkley. It happened to (Dennis) Rodman. It happened to Magic (Johnson). It happens to everybody. If it just started this year I would call it unfair, but I’ve been in the game for 20 years and I’ve seen similar stories.” (Shaquille O'Neal on CNNSI podcast)

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Shaquille O’Neal has offered his first pearl of wisdom while gainfully employed as a TNT analyst.

‘The Big Broadcaster’ weighed-in on the scrutiny LeBron James faced after announcing he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers on national television last July.

One the one hand, Shaq is right. Almost every superstar learned to win by losing. And almost every superstar faced a backlash for decisions on-or-off court.

On the other hand, Shaq is underestimating what James went through. Last season, he and the Miami Heat had a bulls-eye on their backs the size of, well, Shaq.

Yes, Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Charles Barkley, and Magic Johnson dealt with criticism. But no, it was nothing compared to the burnt jerseys, backstabbing, and letter from a former owner that were thrown James' way.

Of course, James dug his grave. He empowered friends who had little business being empowered. He isolated himself. And he, or his wrongfully empowered friends, approved The Decision and The Pre-Emptive Championship Party.

Rather than learn, change, and hire a PR firm, he spent the 2010-11 season fighting upstream against the media. And he seems determined to continue putting himself out there, regardless of the consequences.

Shaq’s first take on James is open to interpretation. He did, however, succeed in getting us to talk, debate, and discuss.

And isn’t that the job of a broadcaster?

Yao: Hall of Fame Player or Hall of Fame Ambassador?

“No. 1 to me, he’s a Hall of Famer,” Van Gundy said. “Idon’t care if you put him in as player, as a contributor or put him in with his own heading. This guy definitely gets in for the greatness as a player when healthy or what he did as ambassador.” He then added a thought he would repeat often.“People forget,” Van Gundy said, “just how good he was.”

Link

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: He goes in as an ambassador –or not at all.

It's tempting to get caught-up and proclaim Yao Ming a Hall of Fame NBA player. After all, Yao is a nice fellow. His numbers were good. And for a very short time, he was the premier center in the NBA.

A pleasant demeanour, good statistics, and a short run as 'The Man in the Middle' doesn't mean Yao deserves basketball's greatest individual honour –at least as a player.

The crème de la crème of NBA players validate themselves by championships. Rings, more than individual statistics, are the measure of greatness.

This is fair. Unlike Major League Baseball, one NBA player can greatly influence a team. So team success is the best gauge of that player's impact.

Yao never won a championship. In fact, he never won a playoff round. Not one best-of- seven series.

Some Hall of Fame greats failed to hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy. Charles Barkley at least made the NBA Finals. Karl Malone and John Stockton twice met Michael Jordan and his Chicago Bulls in the league's June extravaganza.

Barkley, Malone, and Stockton were the best at their position for a prolonged period. For instance, Barkley and Malone were Most Valuable Players; Stockton is still the league's all-time assists leader. Yao, injury or not, has no such achievement on his resume.

The Hall of Fame is exclusive. Coaches, players, fans and journalists shouldn't have to argue that a player deserves entry. The player's career should do that.

Yet, since word of his retirement broke, coaches, players, fans, and journalists have been arguing on behalf of Yao the player.

This is the greatest indicator that Yao is not a Hall of Fame player.

He is, however, a Hall of Fame ambassador, functioning as the bridge between the NBA and the lucrative Chinese market. There's no disputing Yao's influence on the business of basketball.

For this, Yao the ambassador should have a place at the basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts -just not in the players' section.

Breaking News: Sources have confirmed that Shaq has agreed in principle to join Turner. (Darren Rovell)

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: It’s official. Well, sort of.

Shaquille O’Neal has signed a deal with TNT, and will join the Emmy-winning crew of Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith, Charles Barkley, EJ, and Chris Webber.

The potential is obvious. Shaq has incredible charisma; however, some will argue his loud personality will be too much for the already bombastic Sir Charles and friends.

Charles Barkley: the Knicks can’t win playing D’Antoni’s system

"I do not think (the Knicks) can win with that system. I saw it in Phoenix. And let me tell you something, they had a lot more talent in Phoenix. A lot more. Let me just tell you this -- the three most critical areas of the game are defense, rebounding and turnovers. That's one of the fundamental flaws of that system."

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: The NBA won’t like it. New York won’t like it. And the legions of Charles Barkley haters certainly won’t like it.

But ‘The Round Mound of Rebound’ is absolutely right: the Knicks can’t possibly win the NBA Title playing Mike D’Antoni’s ‘Seven Seconds Or Less’ system.

After all, defence wins championships. Shot-happy, entertaining basketball does not.

Consider that the Los Angeles Lakers have won consecutive championships playing air-tight defence. Same with the Boston Celtics, last year’s Eastern Conference champion.

Getting stops has been the key to the start-studded Miami Heat turning around their season. While the league-leading San Antonio Spurs are playing a more up-tempo brand of basketball, they still hold their own defensively.

How can the Knicks buck the trend? Especially since the Phoenix Suns, D’Antoni’s previous team, were never able to break through and win a championship with this brand of fire-wagon basketball.

Simply put, they can’t. Sure, the Knicks can win 50 games. Sure, the Knicks can win the Atlantic Division Title. And sure, they can make some noise in the playoffs.

However, they can’t win it with a run-and-gun style. Eventually, New York will realize this. When they do, D’Antoni -turnaround or not- will be expendable.

Charles Oakley 'loves' LeBron joining Bosh and Wade in Miami

Popular opinion may be decidedly against LeBron James and his decision to hook up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in some kind of Super Friends situation in Miami. Not Oakley.

“I love it. I think in the old days, you don’t win unless you get some right players to win with. You can say this and that about LeBron but Magic had Kareem, James Worthy, he had three or four hall of famers. Bird had three or four hall of famers. M.J. probably just had him and Scottie but when it was all said and done, you had great players around you to win.

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: They don’t make them like Charles Oakley anymore.

He was an original; a one of a kind tough guy at the four-spot, who handled his business on-and-off court.

No modern player would slap their ‘union brother’ to collect a gambling debt or stake out another team’s practice to confront a certain point guard about disrespecting his lady friend. (Isn’t that right Tyrone Hill and Jeff McInnis?)

That’s old school. That’s Oak’.

He also speaks the truth. For instance, LeBron James deserved criticism for how he handled free agency. The Decision was disgusting.

However, King James did not deserve criticism for leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to sign with Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, and the Miami Heat, especially from past greats like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan.

These Hall of Famers conveniently forgot about their supporting casts. Reading their condemnation of James, you’d think Larry-Legend, Magic, and Mike won all fourteen
NBA Titles by themselves.

As Oakley points out, they had help. Lots of it.

Bird played with three Hall of Famers: Denis Johnson, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parrish. He also had Danny Ainge, Cedric Maxwell, and Bill Walton made a one season cameo as sixth-man.

Johnson teamed with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the game’s all-time leading scorer. ‘Big Game’ James Worthy is in the Hall of Fame. Michael Cooper, Kurt Rambis, Byron Scott, and Mychal Thompson didn’t hurt.

This, of course, brings us to Jordan.

Jordan’s partner in crime was only Scottie Pippen, arguably the greatest wing-man in the history of pro basketball and a top fifty player of all time.

Then there was the dude with the bad hair, tattoos, and wedding dress. Dennis Rodman - despite his run on Dr. Drew's Celebrity Rehab - is regarded as the most prolific rebounder to ever put on a pair of high tops.

Throughout his career, ‘His Airness’ also played with useful pieces like BJ Armstrong, Bill Cartwright, Horace Grant, Steve Kerr, and John Paxson.

The Celtics, Lakers, and Bulls weren’t one-man bands. Bird, Magic, and Jordan had stacked supporting cast.

Who did James have in Cleveland?

Well, there was Candace Parker’s brother. Don’t forget Daniel Gibson –better known as Keyshia Cole’s baby daddy. Jamario Moon was once a Harlem Globetrotter.

Veterans Antwan Jamison and Shaquille O’Neal were past their prime, while Mo Williams is undersized, streaky, and 'emo-tional'.

In South Beach, he has a once-in-a-generation talent in Wade. When The King and Flash get bored, they’ll toss the ball inside to CB4.

Credit Oakley for speaking the truth: James made a smart basketball decision by signing with Miami. And he’ll likely get rewarded with championships.

Barkley on LeBron's racism claims: 'it gets more stupid'

Charles Barkley has been one of LeBron James' biggest critics this summer. He's not stopping now.  "It's like watching a movie," Barkley said during a radio interview Friday. "Just when you think it couldn't get any stupider, it gets more stupid."

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: I’m not a visible minority. I don’t live in America. So I can’t comment on race relations in another country.

Right or wrong, fair or not, Charles Barkley and Jason Whitlock – two prominent African American media types - criticized Maverick Carter and LeBron James’ claims that race factored into the negative press surrounding The Decision.

Barkley and Whitlock believe The Decision was panned by journalists, fans, and broadcasters because it was a stupid, sorry exercise, and not because of racism.

Perhaps.

While I don’t condone The Decision, the press seems much more lenient on, say, Brett Favre, a white quarterback from Mississippi, for retiring and un-retiring every year.

The gunslinger’s ‘I-can’t-play-anymore-routine’ is more melodramatic than a ‘tweenage’ girl professing her love for Twilight. Like The Decision, it's an act. Worst of all, it's annual affair every summer -like the Fourth of July or Labour Day.

Why then is Favre more deserving of leeway than James?

Memo to Michael Jordan’s son: what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas

Jordan's 19-year-old son Marcus Jordan tweeted Aug. 20 about spending $35,000 at Haze at Aria Resort & Casino. "Last night was stupid... 35K at Haze," the University of Central Florida sophomore guard said. "Totals 50K something the whole day."

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Ah Mike, grab hold of your son.

Marcus Jordan is underage and carrying on at a Vegas strip club like a Hilton or Lohan. He’s also bragging about playing with Daddy’s money, and the $50,000 he dropped is more than most Americans earn in a year.

Then there’s the matter of Marcus' intelligence, or his lack thereof. Jordan Jr. tweeted about his 'peeler' adventure, even though he’s underage and not making his own bank.

Obviously, Jordan Jr. lacks Jordan Sr.’s smarts. His Airness never bragged about his nights out with Charles Barkley, super models, and god only knows what else.

Clearly, Mike needs to teach Marcus this age old proverb: what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Charles Barkley on LeBron: 'the one hour decision was a punk move'

``If Lebron is taking mental notes of everyone who is taking shots at him this summer, put me on top of your list!  I thought the one hour decision was a punk move.   I thought the dance in Miami was a punk move and I was very disappointed that he left Cleveland to join D.Wade's team."  (quote from Mike Greenberg`s ESPN morning show)

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Charles Barkley, how do you really feel?

The TNT broadcaster and Hall of Fame power forward has been rather outspoken in his criticism of LeBron James. Barkley didn’t like that James left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat. He also didn’t like how he left.

The Round Mound of Rebound’s latest comments came in response to James tweeting that he’s taking ‘mental notes’ on all his enemies, and wants revenge.

Two points are worth noting.

First, Barkley, a former regular season MVP, is wrong to knock James for joining Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in South beach.

James is at his best when facilitating instead of averaging 30 points per night. He’s more Magic Johnson, Scottie Pippen, and Oscar Robertson than, say, Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan. As a facilitator, he needs great players like Wade and Bosh.

At least, James will sacrifice to win. Years ago, a certain four-man’s ego forced Pippen off Hakeem Olajuwon’s Houston squad, and compromised the Rockets’ chances of winning another NBA Title.

Sound familiar Chuck?

That said, there’s no excuse for how James left Cleveland. There’s no justification for him treating the folks who raised, loved, and supported him so badly.

Second, this again proves that The Decision created The Backlash. The ‘heat’ James is taking is self-induced. His tweet about ‘taking mental notes’ forced Barkley to comment.

Just like The Decision - his hour long ESPN special where he broke up with Cleveland for Miami - prompted the state of Ohio to burn his jerseys, while the rest of America named him public enemy number one.

If The Decision doesn’t happen, The Backlash doesn’t happen.

Perhaps James should take his mental notes silently. Perhaps Barkley should just be silent. Unfortunately, there’s zero chance of either happening.

Yao Ming on his injured foot: `I might choose to call it quits`

Houston Rockets centre Yao Ming is considering quitting basketball after next season if he doesn't fully recover from his lingering foot injury.

In comments to Chinese state media Monday, Yao sounded far from optimistic about his future and also made a rare criticism of China`s national basketball program.

“If the foot injury does not heal next season, ``I might choose to call it quits,” he said.

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: Once upon a time, it looked like he wouldn't make it.

Years ago, Yao Ming was a polite, but awkward rookie trying to survive his first NBA season.  Everybody took shots -including TNT broadcasters Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith who believed he'd never score 20 points in a game.

The pundits were wrong. Yao quickly found his way. Today, on-and-off court, he's an international sensation.

When healthy, he’s a top center, a giant with touch and skill. Off-court, he helped the league succeed in the lucrative Chinese market. Thanks to Yao, the NBA is now a global brand.

Hopefully, he makes a comeback. His return would turn the Houston Rockets into a highly competitive squad in the Western Conference.

Whatever happens, his legacy, in America and at home, is complete. Yao has certainly made it.

Jalen Rose on Mike D’Antoni: ‘he was determined not to play me … HATER’

I didn't leave the NBA washed or banged up..Mike D'anPHONY didn't let me contribute my last year..he was determined not me play me..HATER.

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Gee, ever wonder why Jalen Rose hasn’t made it big as an analyst?

After retiring from the NBA, Rose was seen as the next big thing in the broadcast booth. Many were predicting he’d give TNT stars Charles Barkley and/or Kenny Smith a run on the mic`.

Well, they were wrong.

While Rose hasn’t flopped, his second career hasn’t gone as planned, either. Currently, he’s a secondary analyst for ESPN, and calling a former coach - who happens to ply his trade in the league’s biggest market – a ‘HATER’ won’t help.

Oh yeah, let the record show Mike D’Antoni’s Phoenix Suns went 61-21 in 2006-07, which was Rose’s final season in the NBA.
