Cleveland Cavaliers

Will Dan Gilbert let LeBron replace Ferry as Cleveland's de facto GM?

Danny Ferry is out as general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers, choosing not to re-sign his contract that was set to expire in June. The decision comes as a surprise but was made days ago, and complicates the most important offseason in team history.

Ferry's departure Friday after five seasons occurred two weeks after the club fired coach Mike Brown following the team's second-round loss to the Boston Celtics in the NBA playoffs. It also comes as the team is making plans to try to re-sign two-time MVP LeBron James, who will be a free agent next month.

HoopsVibe's Quick Call: It's official. The inmate, LeBron James, is running the asylum -even if he has a foot out the free agent door.

Ferry's firing comes as a surprise because days ago reports indicated the retired forward and owner Dan Gilbert had essentially agreed on an extension.

Apparently, the stumbling block was authority. Ferry rightfully thought a GM needed control over basketball operations. He wasn't prepared to deal with Gilbert or James meddling in personnel decisions.

So he left.

Assistant GM Chris Grant will slide into the big chair in the executive suite. However, it remains to be seen how much authority Grant will have as the new GM.

Expect Gilbert to be very involved this summer. If James resigns, Gilbert and Grant will likely let the superstar pick the new coach and have a large say in all basketball related decisions.

This isn't the way to run a winning organization. For instance, Tim Duncan always defers to coach Gregg Popovich and executive R.C. Buford. The Los Angeles Lakers started winning when Kobe Bryant quit commenting to random fans outside of strip malls about swapping Andrew Bynum for Jason Kidd and focused on basketball. And even the great Michael Jordan had little say in the happenings of the Chicago Bulls.

So Gilbert, who doesn't have James' name on a new deal, is taking a risk in re-structuring his entire organization to suit his free agent superstar.

LeBron James: 'Cleveland Cavaliers have an edge'

LeBron Jame told CNN's Larry King that the Cleveland Cavaliers "have an edge" when it comes to signing him when the free agency period begins on July 1.

James answered "absolutely" when asked by King if Cleveland has an edge to re-sign him due to his familiarity with the team. The interview was taped Tuesday and will air Friday on CNN's "Larry King Live," capping the program's 25th anniversary celebration on the network.

"Absolutely. Because, you know, this city, these fans, I mean, have given me a lot in these seven years. And, you know, for me, it's comfortable. So I've got a lot of memories here. And -- and so it does have an edge," James told King.

HoopsVibe's Quick Call: Surprise, surprise.

Apparently, the old man behind the mic' got a little scoop from LeBron James. Word is the most coveted free agent in pro sports history told Larry King the Cleveland Cavaliers have the inside track on re-signing him.

There are two reasons for this. First, Cleveland, specifically Ohio, is home. Whatever your opion of James, he is loyal. This was made clear in James' bio flick More Than a Game and autobiography Shooting Stars. His relationship with the franchise, city, and state will be a factor.

Second, the Cavaliers - because of the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement - can offer the longest term and most money. And money always matters.

Again, the Czar of CNN and 'Bron are scheduled to have their little sitdown on Friday, so check it out in between game one and two of the NBA Finals.

Can Danny Ferry get LeBron James to re-sign with Cleveland Cavaliers?

Danny Ferry's contract expires in 30 days, but if it is his last month as the Cavaliers general manager, no one within the organization seems to be worrying about it.

Since last summer, Ferry has firmly declined to talk about his future in any setting. Owner Dan Gilbert has declined several interview requests on the matter.

The signs are there, however, that Ferry plans on staying and that Gilbert wants him back. It is possible one of the reasons for the silence is that the two sides are talking about a new contract.

Link

HoopsVibe's Call: Is Danny Ferry the guy? Is the former Duke sharpshooter the guy to convince superstar LeBron James to shun the bright lights of New York and beaches of Miami to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers?

Well, Dan Gilbert apparently thinks so because reports indicate the Cleveland owner will soon give Ferry a new multi-year contract.

Ferry's record as GM is mixed. He's not gun shy and has made several blockbuster trades. Problem is, even with Gilbert's significant resources, he failed to find the right supporting cast for James to excel when it mattered the most in the playoffs.

For Ferry, it's a case of quantity over quality. And it's one more thing James must consider when July 1st hits.

Can Ferry get James to stay in Cleveland? Why? Why not? Get at us in the comment box below.

Cleveland Cavaliers had tuned Mike Brown out

Mike Brown won everything in five years coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers. Everything, that is, except an NBA title.

Brown, the most successful coach in franchise history, was fired after failing to win a championship with superstar -- and soon-to-be free agent -- LeBron James.

The Cavaliers had a midnight deadline Sunday night to fire the head coach or pay him his full $4.5 million salary for next season.

Link

HoopsVibe's Call: Believe it or not, this wasn't about LeBron James' pending free agency.

The Cleveland Cavaliers - whether James re-signs or heads elsewhere this summer - had tuned Brown out.

For consecutive seasons, the team fell short of expectations in the playoffs. Two years ago, against Orlando, their offensive sets were too basic; they also lacked the personnel to stop the Magic's stretch four-man Rashard Lewis.

This year they had supposedly made adjustments, but still folded against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

Perhaps, Brown ran too loose a ship, allowing the sideline to resemble something of a dance show during games. Perhaps, Brown delegated too much to James. Perhaps, Brown had too many weapons at his disposal. And perhaps, the end of season gossip, whether true or not, took its toll.

One thing, however, was clear: the players needed a new, different voice. So Brown had to go. And this had nothing to do with James' uncertain status.

Should Mark Cuban tamper to get LeBron James?

In an interview this week posted on CNNMoney.com, parts of which were also posted on ESPNDallas.com, Cuban expressed his interest in James as a free agent. By commenting on James before he officially becomes a free agent on July 1 -- provided he does not reach an agreement with the Cavaliers before then -- Cuban could be accused of tampering.

Said Cuban in the interview: "Come July 1st, yeah, of course, anybody would be interested in LeBron James, and if he leaves via free agency, then it's going to be tough. If he does like I'm guessing, hoping he will, which is say, 'I'm not going to leave the Cavs high and dry,' if he decides to leave -- there's still a better chance he stays -- then he'll try to force a sign-and-trade, and that gives us a chance. . . . What I do know about LeBron in the minimal time I've spent talking to him is he just wants to win. Money's not his issue. He needs to be someplace where he trusts the organization.

Link

HoopsVibe's Call: Mark Cuban is up to his old tricks -doing anything and everything to give the Dallas Mavericks an opportunity at LeBron James, the most hyped free agent in the history of professional sport.

The league's renegade owner is putting the feelers out, letting James know he'd do a sign-and-trade if the superstar decides not to stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Of course, this is tampering. And, of course, Cuban could well be fined by league head office, but forking over a six figure cheque to the suits in New York would be a small price to pay for James.

Should Cuban tamper to get James? Let us know in the comment box below.

Should LeBron James have a say in trades?

LeBron James has had a lot of power in Cleveland, according to ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher.

Sources told Bucher that James vetoed trades he didn't like for the Cavaliers, while pushing other deals through that he thought would help the team.

Any team that signs LeBron will likely have to set a basis for how much power he'll have in the front office.

Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf never gave that type of power to Michael Jordan, so it's doubtful he'd give it to James.

Link

After all, this creates an uncomfortable dynamic in the locker room. There's a fine line between the two-time MVP having a say in personnel matters and ushering out teammates he doesn't jive with -like former Cleveland Cavaliers forward Drew Gooden.

It's also a distraction. James, who again collapsed in the playoffs, should focus on basketball. Nothing else. The sooner this happens, the better off the two-time MVP and his team will be.

Finally, there's a reason Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, and even Michael Jordan have/had little say in front office matters. Why should James, who hasn't yet won an NBA Title, be different?

Should James have a say in trades? Why? Why not?

Will Cleveland fire Mike Brown to re-sign LeBron James?

"Decision day hasn't arrived yet but it appears everyone is preparing for it.

The Cavaliers had not performed or scheduled exit interviews with players or coaches as of Monday. Once some or all of those take place, there will be a verdict on coach Mike Brown. But if that decision is a parting of ways, the sides are getting ready for it."

HoopsVibe’s Call: Their bags are packed. They’ve said their goodbyes.

Right now, Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown and his assistants are waiting for one thing: their pink slip. That rosy little slip of paper is necessary if the Cavaliers are to have any shot, hope, or prayer at re-signing superstar LeBron James.

After all, Cleveland has fallen short two seasons in a row in the playoffs. This year, their second season failure was epic; the NBA’s best regular season team simply quit against a rejuvenated Boston squad.

So change is inevitable. James wants it. What James, the most highly coveted free agent in the history of professional sports, wants, he gets.

Perhaps, Brown, a defensive wizard and stand up guy, deserves better. Problem is, he, like much of the NBA, is a pawn in the coming free agent frenzy. And number 23, The King, is controlling the board.

Does Brown have to get fired for the Cavaliers to re-sign James?

LeBron James Skips Exit Interview with Cavaliers

James was a no-show at the Cavaliers' practice facility yesterday. His formal exit interview with president Danny Ferry has been postponed. And there already was an erroneous report Mike Brown was fired.

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert denied the report, but Brown did not speak to the media, a telling sign. Gilbert said something could come down in "seven to 10 days" as they "evaluate" the situation. Rumblings are James and Brown had a run-in earlier in the series.

More signs. Sonny Vaccaro, the sneaker-king whose friends with James' entourage, expects James to leave -- for Chicago. The entourage seems to be split between New York, Chicago and Cleveland, and an aide of President Obama said the noted Bulls fan is hoping James comes to the Windy City.

Nets a Possibility for Shaq?

Cavaliers free agent center Shaquille O'Neal, a Newark native, told The Post he would consider the Nets as a destination this summer -- intrigued because they now reside in his hometown.

O'Neal, the Cavs "other" free agent, praised the new Prudential Center as being an NBA hotspot and said he would rather them not move to Brooklyn in 2013.
"I think it's better than most arenas, I think it's one of the best arenas in the country," O'Neal told The Post following the Cavaliers' stunning second-round elimination against Boston on Thursday night. "Hopefully they can stay there forever. I don't know what's going on with the Brooklyn situation, but it says a lot for the city of Newark."

O'Neal has real-estate investments in Newark and is also intrigued in one day being a part-owner of the Nets because they now are in Newark. But he would want them to stay there. Shaq had long wondered why it took so long for the club to move to his hometown. Last season, while with Phoenix, he attended a Devils game at Prudential Center and got a grand tour by the owners.

Shaq: I Want to Keep Playing

So, what does happen now? O'Neal is a free agent now and wants to keep playing.

"Of course," he said. "I missed 360 games because of injury in my career, so by my calculations I still have 3.7 years left. That means I'm going to play until I'm 41. I've been here 17 years but I've missed a lot of games, so I still feel I can play this game."

He has said he really enjoyed his experience in Cleveland, so he'd consider returning, although many things are undecided at this point, including the status of LeBron James and coach Mike Brown.

"There are a lot of free agents on the team," he said. "We just have to sit back and I'm sure everybody's going to do what's best for them."

What's Wrong with LeBron James?

First off, he's undermined his coach by acting lax after losses when Brown has been sounding alarm bells. It is James' personality not to be too worried about anything and it was not expected that he'd be throwing people into lockers and such. But his "we'll get 'em next game" philosophy has clearly backfired. With the exception of Game 3, despite all the handshakes and nonsense, the Cavs have been knocked on their heels in every game.

It has further become problematic that James has been disengaged during the games. Not only has he fallen into the trap of "letting the game come to him," but he's been increasingly distant. In huddles he's looking at the ceiling or into the distance. It is not the James anyone on the team knows and his teammates and coaches have seen it. More problematic, they can't explain it and that is making the entire locker room uneasy.

On Tuesday it was Zydrunas Ilgauskas and O'Neal that actually were more proactive. They were showing more leadership than James both on the floor and off the floor.

There were two skirmishes on the court. One was with Kendrick Perkins and O'Neal and the other was with Mo Williams and Rajon Rondo. James showed no such fire and then didn't get get involved in the exchanges, staying off to the side.

Owner Dan Gilbert Calls out Cavaliers

After the game, in an exclusive interview with The Plain Dealer, Gilbert expressed some frustration at the effort level of his team that he's spending more than $100 million in payroll this season; a team he put together by sparing no expense in an attempt to win the title this season.

"Our entire franchise has done everything in its power to put all of our players and its coaching staff in the best possible position to execute when it counts," Gilbert said. "And to deliver to the highly supportive fans of Cleveland a proud, intense, impassioned all-out drive to achieve a championship."

"The last two home playoff losses and the manner in which we lost these games does not come close to being anywhere near the high expectations all of us have of our organization. Our fans and supporters deserve more."

Kobe Bryant Cracks Jokes about Cleveland, LeBron's Lefty FT

He was amused by one line of questioning revolving around why LeBron James' sore right elbow was receiving so much attention when Bryant's whole body was banged up.

"[Because] it's Cleveland," Bryant cracked. "We have a couple more things to talk about in L.A."

Bryant elaborated his thoughts on the NBA's current back-to-back MVP.

"I've been injured pretty much the entire season, so I think everybody just kind of got used to me playing that way," Bryant said. "He hasn't really had any injury all year long, so this was really like his first injury of the year and it comes at the moment of the playoffs when it's crucial for them so I think there's a lot of attention around it."

It's known around the team that Bryant has been engaged in a left-handed shooting competition with Pau Gasol all season long, so he was asked about the southpaw free-throw attempt that James took in the first round against Chicago.

"It looked nasty," Bryant said. "My form's more like Chris Mullin ... I would have called a timeout [if my shooting elbow was hurting me]."

Anderson Varejão: 'I'm not a flopper. It's a Brazilian samba.'

Don’t refer to Varejao as a flopper. He’s starting to take offense to it.

He earned a spot on the All-Defensive second team this week.

“It’s always good when other people recognize what you do,” he said. “When you work hard, it makes you feel really good about yourself.

“I’m not going to block a lot of shots or get a lot of steals, but I always want to be in the right position. I’m really happy to get that.”

And don’t call him a flopper.

“I’m not a flopper,” he said. “It’s a Brazilian samba.”

LeBron: We Need to Get Shaq Going

The 38-year-old O’Neal is shooting just 36.4 percent from the field (8 of 22).

“We need him to get some kind of rhythm,” LeBron James said. “We need him to get going.”

O’Neal said he’s used to being a bigger part of the offense.

“I’m used to taking 30 or 40 shots a game,” he said. “I just have to make my chippies. It’s only my sixth or seventh game back. I won’t miss them all.”

The 7-foot-1, 325-pound O’Neal missed about seven weeks with thumb surgery. His first game was Game 1 against the Bulls.

Conspiracies about LeBron's Elbow Abound

The Cavs themselves didn't really help matters. With a slip of the tongue, coach Mike Brown on Tuesday led reporters to believe James was about to head to the hospital for his third MRI on the mysterious injury. That alone was enough to create mild panic in greater Cleveland.

Even if the truth was that James had just one MRI, the day after he had a triple-double in the Cavs' Game 4 win over the Bulls 11 days ago, a wave of uncertainty spread.

By the time James actually gave an update on his elbow, which he was seen massaging in an attempt to alleviate pain before Monday's loss, there was some assumption that it was part of a strategy to downplay how injured he might be.

"It felt good today," James said Thursday. "It didn't flare up at all. We had contact drills and I was able to go through the whole practice and it didn't flare up one time, so that's a good sign. It's still a little bit sore, but it's much better. I did treatment the last two days and I believe it will be fine for the game."

Those treatments have included electric stimulation, ice and elevation. Not acupuncture, magnets or prayer, as some have e-mailed the Cavs to suggest.

NBA All-Defensive Team Announced

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, winner of the 2009-10 Defensive Player of the Year Award presented by Kia Motors, and guard Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics headline the NBA All-Defensive First Team, the NBA announced Wednesday.

By totaling 57 points overall, including 28 First Team votes, Howard edged Rondo (50 points overall and 23 First Team votes) as the leading vote-getter.

Also selected to the All-Defensive First Team are forward LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers (45 points), Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant (34 points) and Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace (30 points).

LeBron James: I Don't Feel Pressure

Following the Cavaliers' Game 2 loss to Boston, LeBron James was asked if he feels the pressure from Cleveland fans given their championship drought.

"No, not exactly," replied LeBron. "It's one game. I understand that, the burden and pain Cleveland fans have. I don't feel pressure at all.

"I'm looking forward to Game 3, that's the most important game to this point."

David Stern Wants LeBron to stay with Cavs

NBA commissioner David Stern knows Cleveland fans are anxious about this summer and LeBron James' pending free agency. He is rooting for the same outcome as Cavaliers fans.

"Hopefully he'll stay," Stern said Monday before Game 2 between Cleveland and Boston in the Eastern Conference semifinals. "That's the way the system is designed."

Stern helped negotiate the current collective bargaining agreement, which provides teams the ability to pay more and add an extra year for their own free agents. Stern is hopeful that will allow teams such as Cleveland to retain its stars.

"That's the way it should be," Stern said. "It allows teams to keep their own players."

LeBron James: I'm Prepared if the Celtics Target my Elbow

Garnett is the only player whose actions caused him to miss a game when he elbowed Quentin Richardson of the Miami Heat during a flare-up.

He served his suspension, but his actions could have ramifications. The Celtics’ matchups with Cleveland are traditionally physical, with Garnett in the forefront of Boston’s tough-minded defensive approach. Will referees look to harness him faster to make sure a game does not get out of control, especially if James’s elbow is an issue?

“They’re a physical team anyways,” Cavaliers Coach Mike Brown said. “Whether the elbow’s there or not, their mind-set is to be physical coming into the series.”

Although, James said, what goes around comes around.

“That’s fine,” James said. “I know a lot of those guys have injuries, too, so I’ll be fine.”

The Celtics are aging and irritable, and that means they're almost guaranteed to take a shot at LeBron somewhere along the line. If you haven't noticed, though, LeBron isn't exactly the type to get bullied. It's going to be a tough, ugly series to play in, but an awful lot of fun to watch. Fans of '80s-style hoops are really going to love this one. - CYE

Kobe Sells More Jerseys than LeBron in '09-'10

The Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant once again tops the NBA’s list of most popular jerseys, where he has reigned as No. 1 since the start of the 2008-09 season. The list is based on sales at the NBA Store in New York City and on NBAStore.com since the start of the 2009-10 NBA season through April 2010. Both stores are having record sales years with a combined increase of 20 percent over last year.

Thirteen players competing in the 2010 Playoffs appear on this year’s list. The Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James remains No. 2 and the Boston Celtics’ Kevin Garnett climbed one spot from last year to No. 3. Chicago Bulls sophomore Derrick Rose continues to make a name for himself, coming in at No. 4, while the Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard rounds out the top 5. The Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant debuts in the top 10 for the first time, landing at No. 9, while the Denver Nuggets’ Carmelo Anthony moves from No. 15 to No. 10.

Grant Hill Wins NBA Sportsmanship Award

Grant Hill of the Phoenix Suns is the recipient of the Joe Dumars Trophy presented to the 2009-10 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner, the NBA announced today.

A 15-year veteran, Hill (Pacific) was one of six divisional winners, which included Atlanta’s Al Horford (Southeast), Boston’s Ray Allen (Atlantic), Cleveland’s Antawn Jamison (Central), Denver’s Chauncey Billups (Northwest) and Houston’s Luis Scola (Southwest).

Hill also won the award for the 07-08 and 04-05 seasons.

Dwight Howard Makes Unusual Move in Leaving Agent

In what could be considered a risky upheaval for such a crucial time of the season, Dwight Howard(notes) has left his long-time agent, Aaron Goodwin, multiple sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Howard’s next move is unclear, although sources say he planned to lean more toward letting some extended family and friends manage his business.

Cleveland’s LeBron James(notes) left Goodwin in 2005 with a similar plan.

Goodwin had helped to turn Howard’s gregarious and good-natured way into marketing gold. He constructed an impressive platform of endorsements for Howard, including a believed $6 million-$7 million annual shoe deal with Adidas and major national campaigns with McDonald’s, T-Mobile, Vitamin Water and others. No NBA player is believed to have as many major sponsors.

Not content with abusing the Chicago Bulls at the rim (RIP, James Johnson), King James decided to do it from distance tonight. Danilo Gallinari: I Want LeBron James to Be a Knick

While discussing his reasons for wanting to take a break from basketball this summer, Gallinari said the two words Donnie Walsh will never use until July 1st: LeBron James

Gallinari, in an interview reported by La Stampa, had this to say about his season, the Italian national team, his desire to finish his career in Italy and, of course, LBJ.

"The vote for my season is 8 (out of 10)" said Gallinari. "I have played 81 games and I have again the pleasure to play after a season with big problems at my back and the surgery. We had too many ups and downs and without maintaining continuity is difficult to reach high goals.

"I have talked with Italian Federation President Dino Meneghin but not with the coach Simone Pianigiani. I would like to play but there are some factors to consider: my body and to be ready for the next season with Knicks. I really hope LeBron James (the best player in the League according to Gallinari) will be a Knick. But, however, it is going to be an important season for us" who finished talking about the future of his career. "My project is to finish the career in Italy with Milano".

LeBron James: It Wasn't a Charge

LeBron still didn't agree with the charge call after the game.

"I saw him backpedaling," James said. "Me as a driver, I'm watching the defender's feet. I'm seeing if he's stationed or is still moving. To me, I felt like he was still backpedaling, and as soon as I saw him backpedaling, that's when I decided to take off. They called a charge. I haven't seen the replay, but I know exactly what I've seen on the court with the defender right in front of me."

Joakim Noah said he was concerned Deng would get whistled after seeing James' shot go in.

"I think one of the refs was about to call a block and then he looked at the other ref because he wasn't sure, and the other ref—thank God—called a charge," Noah said.

Joakim Noah: Cleveland Sucks

Bulls center Joakim Noah made some pointed remarks towards the city of Cleveland over the weekend.

He didn't address the media on Monday morning, but did make a few comments as he walked to the team's bus.

"I don't care," Noah snapped. "At all."

Noah told reporters on Sunday that he was not enjoying his time in Cleveland.

He was then asked if the boos he heard during Saturday's Game 1 at Quicken Loans Arena bothered him.

Noah responded: "What? That Cleveland sucks?"

While members of the media and the Cavaliers have taken offense to his comments, Noah's teammates support him.

Cavs Will Lose $10M-$15M on the Season

Despite all that James has done to turn Cleveland into a winner, the Cavaliers have been losing upwards of $20 million per season over the last two seasons, and are projected to lose anywhere from $10-$15 million this season, according to league sources with knowledge of the team's finances.

Not that the Cavs are alone. They're one of many of the 30 NBA teams expected to lose millions — and supply the league's owners with what they see as an iron-clad case for changing the current economic model when the labor agreement expires after next season.

Owners don't believe their losses are merely a direct result of the lousy economy, which can be partly to blame for the league's 2% decline in ticket sales. For the men who sign the players' paychecks, the very system under which they operate is obsolete, only five years after they signed their last collective bargaining agreement and guaranteed players 57% of basketball related income (BRI).

Shaq Happy to Remain with Cavaliers

Shaquille O'Neal wants to return to the Cavaliers next season, dang gumit.

[...]

The 38-year-old center would like to re-sign with the Cavs next year.

"If they want me back, yes, I wouldn't mind," O'Neal said. "I'm having a great time. The fans are fabulous.

"I'm quite impressed with the organization and (Coach Mike) Brown. I'm very, very impressed and surprised how Cleveland would go, (with) me being from a sunny environment. I'm having a fabulous time. I love Richfield. I've had one of the greatest times ever."

LeBron: The Bulls Are Facing a Different Monster

The Bulls, who in recent days have been dealing with ugly reports of an altercation between coach Vinny Del Negro and executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson, are huge underdogs against the Cavs -- the league's best team all season.

But despite the perceived mismatch and Chicago's long odds, Bulls forward Joakim Noah said he and his teammates plan "to try to shock the world" and upset the Cavs.

"We're ready for the challenge," James said. "I think Noah's a really good player. He's a really good talent. But, you know, he asked for us a couple weeks ago and he got us. So we're ready. It's a different monster they're going to be playing against on Saturday."

For the first time since Feb. 25, the Cavs will take the floor with Shaquille O'Neal at center.

After missing 23 games following surgery to repair a torn right thumb ligament, O'Neal has come back rested and ready to fulfill his goal of winning a championship with James. The 7-foot-1 center has returned in incredible shape, saying he spent the down time "eating right, swimming, working out, doing what I do. It's all about the mission."

John Wall Likely to Sign with LeBron James' Marketing Firm

LeBron James befriended John Wall at his All-American camp as a high school senior, traveled to campus to watch him play and even enlisted rapper Drake to woo John Wall to LRMR, James’ fledgling marketing company.

Multiple NBA, agent and sneaker industry sources say Wall is close to partnering with the firm.

James’ childhood friend, Maverick Carter, is the CEO of LRMR and responsible for running his management company. Carter’s had a consistent presence with Wall’s AAU coach and surrogate, Brian Clifton, for months, and Clifton offered nothing to dispute the word of sources who say James and Wall are going into business together.

Clifton insisted there’s nothing “formal in place” with LRMR, and an announcement wouldn’t happen until Wall completes paperwork to enter the draft.

Shaq Has Lost 20 Pounds from 'running and cutting out cheeseburgers'

When O'Neal first had surgery to repair the torn ligament in his thumb, the team projected he could be out up to eight weeks. That timetable could have forced him to miss the first round of the playoffs.

But Monday was exactly six weeks to the day that Dr. Thomas Graham fixed O'Neal's thumb at the National Hand Center in Baltimore and O'Neal was at 100 percent.

Doctors were so pleased with the healing process that O'Neal, who has lost around 20 pounds by running and cutting out cheeseburgers during his absence, probably could have returned earlier if the games were more important.

Perhaps not wanting to jinx the recovery, O'Neal declined to talk about his progress Monday and said he would discuss it when he was activated.

"I think he's ready to go; he said he's healthy," LeBron James said. "He's in shape, but it is totally different from being out on the court and that type of shape."

Insiders Say LeBron Closer to Re-Signing with Cavs

However, as the Cavs finish off the best record in the NBA for a second consecutive year and James prepares to win his second Most Valuable Player Award, something is indeed happening.

After being mostly neutral and downright noncommittal for some time, those closest to James have been altering their view recently. The vibe being sent out from James' camp -- whether it is private conversations or discussions about new business or plans for the near future -- is that James currently is leaning strongly toward re-signing with the Cavs.

That may sound vague and, as always, it continues to be fragile. Yet there is no denying the gradual shift within James' circle and, it is assumed, by James himself.

James has declined to talk publicly about free agency since November. But as one source said, "I have never been so sure that he's going to stay in Cleveland than I am right now."

LeBron James May Sit out Rest of Regular Season

LeBron James' regular season could be over.

James was one of four starters missing for Friday's game against the Indiana Pacers. With home-court advantage already clinched throughout the playoffs, coach Mike Brown didn't rule out his healthy superstar also sitting against Orlando on Sunday and Atlanta on Wednesday.

"There's a chance," Brown said. "I talked about that with my staff and I talked about it a little bit with him, too. We'll take that one game at a time and see how it goes."

James, who missed Thursday's game at Chicago, was joined on the bench Friday by starters Mo Williams, Antawn Jamison and Shaquille O'Neal and reserve Daniel Gibson.

Jamison was injured Thursday when Chicago's Luol Deng stepped on his right foot during a drive to the basket. Jamison grimaced in pain when it happened, but by Friday was walking without a limp and taking part in pregame shootaround.

Boozer: I Think LeBron Is Going to Stay

Free-agent-to-be Carlos Boozer sounded intrigued about joining Mike D'Antoni's Knicks, but believes if he comes to New York, it won't be in a star tandem with LeBron James.

Boozer and James were Cleveland teammates for King James' rookie year. Boozer left Cleveland the first chance he got -- for a multi-year contract with Utah in 2004. But Boozer doesn't think James will leave his hometown.

"I think LeBron's going to stay," Boozer said before scoring 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting with 14 rebounds in Utah's 103-98 victory last night over the Knicks at EnergySolutions Arena.

"That's my gut. They're doing everything they can to build him a championship. His biggest thing is winning a ring. I think his best chance to win a ring is probably where he's at."

Cavs to Alter Uniforms for Next Season

The Cavaliers are planning on slightly changing their team colors and also revamping their standard home and road uniforms for next season. For about two years the idea has been in the works, the amount of time the team must give the league before making a uniform adjustment, but the designs are not finalized.

It will not be a major change, team sources said, like seven years ago when the team brought back its current "new expression of wine and gold" and a new logo featuring crossing swords.

LeBron James: If I Wanted, I Could Win Scoring Title Every Year

Durant has already said he thinks James will win. James says he doesn't care and, if he did, he'd win the scoring race every year.

"If it happens, it happens, it is not important to me at all," said James, who won the scoring title in the 2007-08 season and at 27.8 points a game is currently the active leader in career scoring average.

"Our team is trying to clinch (homecourt advantage) for the whole playoffs and is more important. If I really wanted to, I if really wanted to win the scoring title I could win it every single year," James said. "Every single year, I could really do it. But it doesn't matter to me."

LeBron Is Keeping an Eye on Danilo Gallinari

Gallinari, who was limited to just 28 games as a rookie due to a back injury that eventually required surgery, has been inconsistent this season. Three weeks ago, Mike D'Antoni criticized Gallinari for his lackluster play, but recently he's been one of the Knicks' most consistent players.

Gallinari's development is crucial for several reasons. He's one of the few Knicks under contract for next season, and his presence could either hurt or help the team recruit a significant free agent this summer. In November, when the Cavs made their one and only visit to the Garden this season, a LeBron James confidant pointed at Gallinari and said "LeBron wants to see how this kid does this year."

After the game, LeBron approached Gallinari to offer encouragement and advised him to make sure he stretches his back before every game. Jordan was never that chummy with Kukoc.

LeBron James to Ink New Deal with Nike

LeBron James has one major free agent decision nearly settled.

James hinted on Sunday that he was close to agreeing to a long-term extension with Nike to continue to be one of their top pitchmen. James' original seven-year contract that paid him in excess of $100 million with bonuses is set to expire in a couple of months.

"I don't plan on going anywhere, maybe I already have a agreement," James said perhaps not wanting to take away from a formal announcement. "I take care of my business on and off the court."

Could Joe Johnson Lure LeBron to Knicks?

ESPN NBA analyst Ric Bucher quoted a league source yesterday when he said that LeBron James might be more interested in coming to the Knicks if they have Hawks' shooting guard Joe Johnson.

"If it's LeBron James they want," Bucher said, "a league source says the Hawks' shooting guard is a very good place to start."

Shaq Returns to Cleveland to Rehab Thumb

Injured Cleveland center Shaquille O'Neal has rejoined the Cavaliers.

O'Neal, who has been out since tearing a ligament in his thumb on Feb. 25 and undergoing surgery, has been resting at home in Florida since the operation. He was back at the team's facility on Monday, but did not speak to reporters after the Cavs practiced and left for a game in Detroit.

General manager Danny Ferry said O'Neal met with doctors and will be starting rehabilitation. He will not be traveling with the team.

Kendrick Perkins: Cavs Are Better without Shaq

"They still haven"t won nothing," he said Saturday of Cleveland. "They're just the best team in the league. They still haven't done nothing we haven't done. Right now, they're the best team in the league and we just got to go at them."

O'Neal has been sidelined with an injured right thumb he suffered against the Celtics on Feb. 25. The Cavs hope to get O'Neal back for the playoffs, but have gone 7-1 without the legendary center.

"In my opinion, I think they're better," Perkins said. "They can run more. You've got Anderson Varejao, who's more of an active body. He gets LeBron (James) open a lot - opens up the paint for him.

"I think they're a better team. Obviously Shaq can help them, but I think they're better - a more fast-paced team."
