It’s arguable to determine the greatest draft of all time with help from great pieces written by Paul Eide. Personally, the 1984 draft had the best first round of all time: Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, John Stockton, Charles Barkley, Alvin Robertson, Michael Cage, Otis Thorpe, Kevin Willis, Sam Perkins, and Jerome Kersey. That is 4 top 50 all time NBA players, 9 rings, 7 league MVP trophies, 8 Finals MVP trophies, 4 Defensive Player of the Year awards, 2 quadruple doubles, and 23 All NBA First Team selections.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: This is what Coach Alvin Gentry has been reduced to.

The personable sideline boss must put a positive spin on his Phoenix Suns signing shooter Michael Redd, who has struggled with injuries the last few years.

Redd, a veteran who is attempting to resurrect his career, is the best the Suns can afford -even in the post-lockout world of greater parity and revenue sharing.

The problem is simple: Robert Sarver. The Suns’ controversial owner doesn’t have the resources to sustain an NBA team, let alone one that will stay in contention for a playoff spot.

So Suns’ management must cut corners and react. Draft picks are sold. Star talent is allowed to walk. And cheap replacements are brought in.

Hopefully, Redd resurrects his stalled career with a solid year. Even this won’t change the Suns’ sinking fortunes in a competitive Western Conference.

If the Heat cannot sign preferred choices Shane Battier, Grant Hill or Tayshaun Prince postlockout, Miami will consider Michael Redd.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Is he healthy? Is he willing?

In theory, Michael Redd could absolutely help the Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat win an NBA Title.

For years, Redd was a prolific scorer with the Milwaukee Bucks, killing opponents with his deadly outside range.

The left-handed gunner has the skill-set to punish defenses for cheating on Chris Bosh, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade.

Of course, health matters. In the last two seasons, Redd has played in just 28 games, and doesn’t resemble the perimeter threat that terrorized opposing defenses.

Redd's goal may be to re-establish his reputation as a star rather than support another team's stars -like Bosh, James, and Wade in Miami.

If healthy and willing, Redd would help the Heat. A contender can never have enough shooting or depth.
