San Antonio Spurs

Video: Chris Paul's error leads to Spurs beating Clippers in OT

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: Not a good look.

Chris Paul's late turnover allowed San Antonio guard Gary Neal to hit a game-tying three-pointer that sent the Clippers-Spurs game into overtime.

The Spurs won in extra time, and Paul described the play as the worst of his career. Watch the video and tell us thoughts in the comment box below.

Re-united: Spurs get Stephen Jackson from Warriors for Richard Jefferson

Source: RJefferson for SJackson being discussed.

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Did the San Antonio Spurs win the 2012 Trade Deadline with the acquisition of a three-man who had been chained to Scott Skiles’ bench in Milwaukee?

The answer: a resounding yes.

For whatever reason, Richardson Jefferson hasn’t fit with the Spurs. Perhaps he’s too nice. Perhaps he’s too soft. Perhaps he’s to skilled and not gritty enough.

Well, Jefferson is no more. The former All-Star was sent to the Golden State Warriors for Stephen Jackson, who arrived in The Bay as part of the Andrew Bogut-Monta Ellis trade.

The Spurs, specifically coach Gregg Popovich, love Jackson. They love his toughness, defense, and ability to take and make big shots.

And the feeling is mutual. After all, Popovich and Jackson won a championship together.

Best of all, this trade saves the Spurs about $10 million - as Jefferson was scheduled to earn 22 million over the next two seasons, while Jackson is only on the books through 2013 for $10 million.

Got thoughts? Well, get at HoopsVibe News in the comment box below.

Stephen Jackson: I should have never left San Antonio

“Every day, I wish I wouldn’t have ever left,” said Jackson, whom the Spurs acquired Thursday by trading Richard Jefferson to Golden State. “My career has taken me to a lot of places, but it’s good to end up back here where I always felt I belonged. “It’s sweet, man. Great team, great young guys, the organization is still one of the best in the league, if not the best, and I’m just happy to be back where I’ve always been family and somewhere I want to be.”

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Stephen Jackson finally gets that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Years ago, Jackson helped the San Antonio Spurs win a championship; however, he left as a free agent after a trivial contract dispute.

The Spurs - with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker - continued winning, while Jackson became a basketball-nomad, alienating some combination of coaches, teammates, fans, and law enforcement in each of his stops.

Worst of all, ‘Captain Jack’ teased with his talent. Remember, the versatile swing was terrific for the Golden State Warriors before falling-out with coach Don Nelson.

Over the years, one thing never changed: Jackson and the Spurs were good together.

So Thursday’s news that the black-and-silver had acquired Jackson for Richard Jefferson was hardly a surprise. His shooting and toughness could be the difference between the Spurs winning or losing a round in the Western Conference playoffs.

Expect Jackson to shine in this second stint with the Spurs. He’s learned - the hard way - that San Antonio is pretty green.

Tony Parker: Spurs 'very interested' in Boris Diaw

By agreeing to a buyout now, Diaw can be waived in time to potentially sign with a contender and be eligible for a playoff roster. San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker, Diaw’s close friend and French national-team teammate, recently said on a French radio program that Diaw would be welcome with the Spurs.

“He’s in shape,’’ Parker reportedly said. “I’m the first to make fun of him when he gains too much weight, but right now it’s not the case. We’re very interested to get him.’’

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Veterans can be a blessing or curse for rebuilding teams.

Boris Diaw was likely the latter for Michael Jordan, Paul Silas, and the Charlotte Bobcats, which has resulted in the NBA’s worst team buying out the finesse forward.

Diaw is known for his passing, basketball IQ, and versatility. And such attributes helped him win the Sixth Man of the Year award with the Phoenix Suns.

He's also known for poor conditioning, apathy, and arrogance. And such attributes led to strained relations with the Hawks, Suns, and Bobcats.

Diaw, who fell out of Silas’ rotation in early March, was probably moping and serving as a poor influence for the Bobcats’ many young pieces.

Now he’ll have the chance to catch on with a contender, while the thrifty Bobcats save some money on his $9 million contract.

Perhaps Diaw hooks up with Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs. The two are friends from their days with the French national team and Parker recently told a European radio station that the Spurs ‘were very interested to get him’ (Diaw).

Got thoughts? Well, get at HoopsVibe News in the comment box below.

Tony Parker: Spurs can beat Thunder to win championship

"Our goal is to win a championship. Tim Duncan and I haven’t got a lot of time left. The Spurs made the right moves by signing Stephen Jackson, Boris Diaw and Patty Mills. We have a complete team now. We know we can beat everybody in the West, we proved it by beating OKC two times already. Winning another title is something we can do this year. (…)

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: In the last month, the San Antonio Spurs have added Boris Diaw, Stephen Jackson, and Patty Mills to take, perhaps, their final run at an NBA championship.

This has All-Star point guard Tony Parker excited -and with good reason.

The black-and-silver has accumulated a potentially potent mix of youth and experience. They still have their ‘Big Three’ in Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker, while DeJuan Blair, Kwahi Leonard, Gary Neal, and Tiago Splitter are all young and athletic.

The key could be Jackson. If he finds his past form -something that shouldn’t be too difficult as he won a championship with the Spurs in 2003- then Gregg Popovich’s crew could give the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers competition out west.

Got thoughts? Well, get at HoopsVibe News in the comment box below.

Scott Brooks thinks resting stars is 'Cheating the Game'

Brooks has never subscribed to sitting players. He has likened the strategy to “cheating the game” and the fans. And on Sunday, he confessed that his team's youth plays a part as well. “If we had a bunch of veteran guys in their 30s, there's no question things would be different,” Brooks said. “But our guys, if you take out some of the guys, they'll think I'm benching them twice a game. They want to play every minute. They love to play and they want to keep playing. It's like pulling teeth to get five or six minutes out of them per half.”

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Scott Brooks may be right. But it doesn’t matter.

In a way, resting players for the playoffs is cheating fans and, in turn, the game. Still, Brooks, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s head coach, isn’t a caretaker or advocate for basketball.

He has one job: to win. He is accountable to Clay Bennett and the other owners of the Thunder, who want to win.

So Brooks -- although his intentions are good -- should focus on getting the most from his players and beating the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, and all other foes in the Western Conference.

Simply put, nothing else matters -like the good of the game.

Parker Sues Club over Chris Brown and Drake Brawl

Spurs' Tony Parkes sues Club W.I.P. over Chris Brown and Drake Fight.

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: Drake, Chris Brown, and Rihanna all roll their eyes somewhere when they read Tony Parker's lawsuit.

As you might have heard, Tony Parker got some glass in his eye when Chris Brown and Drake got into a fight in New York last week. The fight went down at a nightclub in Manhattan called Club W.I.P.

Well, this week Parker filed suit again club W.I.P. for $20 million. The lawsuit states W.I.P. operators were negligent in security and supervision for allowing the fight between Chris Brown (and entourage) and Drake (and entourage), since they had a known history. This history mostly revolves around Drake sleeping with Chris Brown's ex girlfriend Rihanna and rubbing it in Chris Browns face.

The suit does not blame Drake or Chris Brown as defendants, but comes after the club for negligence. It goes on to state, "The defendants were reckless, careless, and negligent in permitting Drake's entourage and Brown's entourage to be in the club at the same time despite known tension between the two."

Top 10 Biggest Surprises of the 2013 NBA Season

Top 10 biggest surprises of the 2013 NBA Season.

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: Lakers Suck, Chicago's Legit, Who's Gortat, and Harden's unstoppable.

#10 Marcin Gortat blocks a ton of shots.

I don't think you would have found too many NBA analysts picking Marcin Gortat as the shot block leader, but after one week of games he sits atop the standings with 3.5 blocks per game. He beat out big name guys like Roy Hibbert 3.25 blocks per game and Josh Smith 3.0 blocks per game, but can Gortat keep this up or is he simply on a lucky streak?

#9 Brandon Jennings lights up the league.

After one week of NBA ball, Brandon Jennings leads the league in both assists with 13 per game and steals with 4 per game. This may be the year Jennings fully comes into his own and shows the NBA he is not simply a solid player, but a star in the league.

#8 Houston Rockets can compete.

Starting off the season 2-1 is encouraging for the Rockets. This is especially true because their new guard combo of James Harden and Jeremy Lyn appears to be clicking on all cylinders. Harden at marched out to an amazing first week and Lyn as put up rock solid numbers too. Lyn's put up 15.8 points per game, 7.3 assists per game, and 5.7 assists per game. More on Harden's numbers below.

#7 Clippers beat Lakers.

With the Lakers grabbing Dwight Howard and Steve Nash this off-season, it appeared Los Angeles was safely in the grips of the Lakers. Yet, when these two teams met for their first inter-city competition this year it was the Clippers that looked faster, strong, and more dominant. They handed the Lakers their 3rd straight loss of the season.

#6 Knicks destroy Miami.

The Knicks put a whooping on the defending NBA champions 104-84 the first week of the season. They also marched out to a 3-0 start in the first week. It looks like New York might have just figured out how to make all these pieces fit together and the answer much just be the great facilitator Jason Kidd.

#5 Milwaukee Bucks got game.

The Bucks are out to a 2-0 start and are showing they are no pushover this year. Lead by feisty point guard Brandon Jennings who leads the NBA in both assists and steals, the Bucks have quickly become a team to watch out for. They might just be the sleeper team of 2013.

#4 Spurs aren't that old.

Everyone always seems to count the Spurs out even though they had the best record in the NBA both of the last two years. They started of this season hot again going 4-0. So much for too old, too slow, and not enough talent. With the Lakers struggling and the Thunder figuring out how to win without Harden, this could the the Spurs year to take the West.

#3 Chicago Bulls are legit without Rose.

Everyone figured this season was a bust with Derek Rose out, but Joakim Noah and Luol Deng are picking up the slack and have Chicago 3-1. This team still maintains a great defense and ability to shutdown opposing teams. If they can keep their offensive production solid, they just might make a run at the East.

#2 James Harden is an animal.

James Harden has singe-handedly taken the NBA by storm this year. Who knew putting Harden in the starting lineup would result in a 35.3 point per game average over the first week of the season. Harden has shown why at 6 foot 5 inches tall and a quick 220 lbs. he is so difficult to guard. Everyone knew he was good, but so far this year his numbers are amazing.

#1 Lakers Suck.

The Lakers were supposed to tear the Western Conference apart this year. They signed the best center in the league and a perennial NBA All Star at point guard to go with already impressive lineup of one of the best shooting guards in the history of the NBA and two other regular NBA All Stars in Gasol and World Peace. This was going to be a Dream Team of sorts. People were predicting a 72-win season and yet they started 0-3! They eventually won a game and now stand embarrassingly tied for last place in the Pacific Western Conference.

Are the Lakers Imploding?

I have an admission to make: I've been pretty bored with the NBA 's regular season. It's not that there haven't been plenty of interesting things going on in the league for the last month, I've just been more interested in getting to the 2 1/2 month marathon that is the Playoffs. But in preparation for the postseason, I re-engaged late last week. And as a reward for my rededication, the Lakers decided to make it worth my while. They're still my pick to come out of the Western Conference, but they've definitely added some intrigue to what may have been an otherwise predictable run to the Finals.

What are the greatest teams ever assembled besides the 1992 Olympic Dream Team? Where do we start? Punching numbers in to a system to calculate outcomes between great teams do not work. And basketball videogames are not the answer either.

Eva Longoria and Tony Parker Meet for Lunch

We discovered not too long ago that Eva Longoria and Tony Parker were set to split after TP9 allegedly put the naughty on the wife of former Spur Brent Barry. Nasty stuff all-round, and with Eva apparently unwilling to overlook Tony's infidelities it was no surprise that the pair bought a one-way ticket to Splitsville.

Traditionally, the interested parties sever all contact and leave it to the suits to divide the marbles and finalize the divorce. This time, however, it seems as if the estranged pair are looking to do things a little more personally, meeting face-to-face in an L.A.-area hotel before the Spurs-Clippers game to talk things over. So what does this mean? It could merely be that Eva and Tony are hoping to separate amicably, with a meeting on neutral ground a commitment to keeping this divorce from becoming unnecessarily messy. It could also be one last effort by TP9 to win back his lady before they reach the point of no return.

Even after watching him scrape defenders off the sole of his sneakers numerous times in his career, I'm still occasionally taken aback by some of the things J.R. Smith is capable of doing in the air. Brandon Jennings thinks Stephen Jackson makes Bucks a top team in the east

“The first day Stephen Jackson walked into the facility, I knew right then and there it was going to be a different year,’’ Jennings said. “And it’s going to be a year that I think we’re going to be successful.

“The thing about the NBA is the league gets better and better every year. It’s never going to be the same, so I think with Stephen Jackson and a healthy Andrew Bogut and Drew Gooden, I think we’ll be talented enough to play with any of the top teams in the East, hands down.’’

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Brandon Jennings is right to suggest Stephen Jackson will impact the Milwaukee Bucks.

Will it be for better or worse, though?

Jennings believes his new teammate will use his talent for good, transforming the Bucks into a contender out east.

There`s evidence to support this view: Jackson was a champion with the San Antonio Spurs; helped the Charlotte Bobcats make their first-ever playoff appearance; and was terrific for the Golden State Warriors in 2007.

And there`s evidence to refute this view: Jackson bolted on those same Spurs, fell out with the Bobcats, and demanded the Warriors trade him months after signing a lucrative extension.

The hope is that Jackson will warm to his new surroundings. When healthy, Jennings and Andrew Bogut are a solid pair. Coach Scott Skiles will appreciate his tenacity as long as Jackson doesn`t become a distraction.

Who can forget the shenanigans that took place with the Indiana Pacers?

Of course, Jackson’s deal expires in 2013, so he’ll have to perform if he wants a contract from the Bucks or another team.

Jennings is right: Jackson will make the Bucks better. For now, it`s in his interests to do so.

Rumor: Spurs moving Parker and Jefferson?

Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Spurs had been “in discussions” with the Raptors and Kings for a deal involving Parker.

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call:
Want Tony Parker? Well, you may have to take Richard Jefferson, too.

A few weeks ago, Tony Parker told reporters the San Antonio Spurs’ championship window had closed. Parker believed the organization needed to rebuild.

Of course, the you-know-what-hit-the-Alamo-fan. Parked denied saying his Spurs were done. Management assured the public they’d still contend.

Business as usual, right? Well, wrong.

The Spurs are indeed rebuilding. And Parker, ironically, might be the piece this quasi-dynasty uses to turn the page, flip-the-script, and start over.

The Spurs have reportedly made their French point guard available in hopes of securing a lottery pick. Word is the Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings are interested.

However, the Raptors, Kings, or any other team would have to assume the four years and $32 million left on Richard Jefferson’s deal. This is a steep price for a former All-Star on the back end of his career.

Bottom line: Parker is on the trading block. Jefferson may go, too. And the Spurs are officially rebuilding.

Tony Parker: Spurs' championship window is over

Tony Parker says that age has finally caught up with the Spurs. "At the start of the season I said this was our last chance," he said. "Tim and Gino (Manu Ginobili) are getting old. It's going to be tough to regenerate ourselves.

Link

HoopsVibe`s Very Quick Call: Good. Just not great.

This is how Tony Parker sees his San Antonio Spurs, who, according to the lightning-quick table-setter, are now too old to win an NBA championship.

Parker thinks the Spurs are still relevant, though; however, their days of June victory parades along the San Antonio river-walk are no more.

Going forward, the Spurs` greatest challenge is identity -as in they lost theirs.

For years, Gregg Popovich`s crew were known for air-tight defence. Home or away, they were always competitive because they got-stops.

This season, they shifted to an up-tempo system to create easy hoops for the veterans. It worked during the regular season when games are open.

In the playoffs, the tempo slows. Teams get dirty, especially on defense. And the Spurs couldn`t adjust, which resulted in a, somewhat, surprising loss to the upstart Memphis Grizzlies.

So for the Spurs to stay competitive, they must rediscover their defensive chops. Or, The Alamo could continue falling in the Western Conference.

Gary Neal saves the day, and season, for San Antonio Spurs

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: They were down 3-1 in the series. And they were down 3 with seconds remaining.

So, who did the San Antonio Spurs turn to when their season was on-the-line? Tim Duncan? Manu Ginobili? Richard Jefferson? Or even Tony Parker?

No, Coach Gregg Popovich called on rookie Gary Neal to tie the game with a clutch three-pointer. The Spurs then won in overtime.

To be fair, this wasn't a complete shocker because Neal led all rookies in three-point percentage. However, most first year players would find the circumstances overwhelming.

Not Neal, though.

Watch the clip and get at us with thoughts in the comment box below.

Tony Allen thinks Manu Ginobili is a faker

Never one to shy away from controversy, Memphis guard Tony Allen on Sunday accused Manu Ginobili of faking his well-documented elbow injury. “It’s for the birds,” Allen said. “Everybody is banged up. You don’t see me running to my PR guy telling him about an injury.”

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Tony Allen calls it like he sees it. And he sees Manu Ginobili as a faker.

Allen, a lockdown defender for the Memphis Grizzlies, believes Ginobili, a swing for the San Antonio Spurs, is exaggerating his elbow ailment and instructing his ‘PR guys’ to publicize his injury.

This is about the head. Not the elbow. Allen must stop Ginobili from scoring. Ginobili must ignore Allen and score.

Both sides are looking for an advantage in their game of cat-and-mouse. For instance, tempers momentarily flared between these two in game three when Allen 'landed' on Ginobili.

There's also something else at play. Allen, one of the toughest players in the NBA,  doesn't respect Ginobili, one of the biggest floppers in the NBA

(You've just been Ginobili-ed.)

Allen and Memphis, with a 2-1 advantage, can smell blood. They'll continue to seek an advtange with their war of words.

After receiving a technical foul during Tuesday's game against the Spurs, Bryant stormed to the bench, hit his seat before sitting down, threw a towel and then yelled "Bennie!" toward referee Bernie Adams. Bryant then leaned back and muttered a gay slur.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Everybody screws up and says things they regret.

Yesterday, Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant screwed up and said something he should regret in a game against the San Antonio Spurs.

After getting slapped with a technical foul, Bryant called the referee a homophobic slur that's intolerable. The television cameras, of course, caught his lapse.

Unfortunately, Commissioner David Stern’s punishment isn't enough. The NBA’s head suit called Bryant’s words ‘inexcusable’ and fined the five-time champion $100, 000.

To you and me, 100K is a lot of money; however, it’s a mere drop in the bucket for Bryant. After all, the Lakers are paying him a whopping $25 million for the 2011 season.

Stern can’t suspend Bryant for a playoff game, but he can force him to sit a game or two next season. Or, Stern could encourage Bryant to explain his words publicly or even raise awareness of homophobia by partnering with a gay and lesbian organization.

A fine isn’t enough.
