Spike Lee 'thanks' Mark Jackson and Warriors for cutting Jeremy Lin

According to Jackson, Lee “thanked” Jackson for making Lin available so that the Knicks could pick him up. “I got a text message from Spike Lee this morning,” Jackson said after Warriors’ practice on Saturday. “I had nothing to do with Jeremy Lin. I never saw him do a layup. So for the people … stop asking me. He never practiced for us so leave me out of it.”

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Of course, the New York Knicks’ superfan, director Spike Lee, has a funny take on Jeremy Lin.

After all, Lee, also known as Mars Blackman, once took on the entire Indiana Pacers -in particular Hall of Fame two-guard Reggie Miller. Who can forget Reggie flashing the infamous choke sign at Lee in the mid nineties?

For better or worse, this is who Lee is. It’s no surprise he texted Mark Jackson, ‘thanking’ the Golden State Warriors’ coach for waiving Lin, the Knicks’ newfound saviour at point guard.

In Jackson’s defense, he already has two talented, smaller guards: Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis. No minutes were available for Lin, who would have languished on the Warriors’ bench.

Bottom line: every NBA-er has talent. Lin’s success, like many players, is about finding the right opportunity. And he has his opportunity in New York.

Just don’t tell Lee. Why spoil the fun?

Warriors, Mark Jackson say Nuggets played "dirty" in game 5 win

Monta Ellis to Warriors Staffer: 'Hey Sexy'

Ellis allegedly texted Smith "several times in a single day, late at night or in the early morning hours," using a "secret" telephone that was kept by an equipment manager with the team, the suit claims. The texts from Ellis included phrases like "I want to be with you," and "Hey Sexy," to which Smith responded with, "What do you want?" and "I am sleeping," the suit alleges.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Some people never learn. Ever.

Sadly, it appears Monta Ellis, the talented combo guard for the Golden State Warriors, is one of those people.

First, there was moped-gate. Ellis injured himself riding an electrical device my ten year old nephew calls lame and lied about it as rolling on a moped is a violation of his contract.

Second, Ellis asked several times for a trade. Some of his requests were private; some of his requests were public, bringing controversy to The Bay.

Third, Ellis welcomed blue-chip prospect Stephen Curry to his first pro training camp by declaring the two couldn’t start in the same backcourt.

To be fair: Ellis and Curry have made amends.

And finally there’s this: Ellis, allegedly, acted like a Delta Bravo (that’s a polite way of calling him something that rhymes with Fouche Bag) to a team employee.

Worst of all, the Warriors, allegedly, covered for his Delta Bravo/Fouche Baggery. They fired the employee and this could get awfully messy, as there’s a smoking gun that shows Ellis’ sexual harassment.

The Warriors have a new owner, Joe Lacob, and rookie coach, Mark Jackson, who are both trying to change the dysfunction and incompetence that has plagued the organization.

This won’t help. Unfortunately, there will be no trade market for Ellis with such a controversy hanging over his head.

So Lacob and Jackson have one choice: they must stick by Ellis and hope he finally learns.

2010-2011 Top 10 Fantasy Statistical Point Guards (10-6)

Christmas is upon us. I bet you crazies are recovering from the annual Black Friday or Thanksgiving. I’m not. I’m whatever at this point because I’m keeping tabs as the era of great point guards gets even crazier around the NBA as they reign supreme. Stat tracking gets somewhat difficult because I just want to watch them play. Quality point guards are not difficult to find anymore compared to years’ past. Even if you do not land anyone listed among the top 10 in your fantasy draft, there are more good point guards hidden in the waiver wire depending on the league’s depth. Stats are up to date as of December 1, 2010.

Stephen Curry on Monta Ellis: 'We Want Him With Our Team'

“I don’t know about the talks he had with the front office or where they ended before the lockout, but as of right now, he’s still a Warrior,” Curry said of Ellis. “We want him with our team. He makes us better. And I think with a fresh start and all the new faces with the organization that will help him forget about the past and not really affect what is going on right now.

“I know there has been a lot of turmoil with him and the organization in the past. I can’t speak for him, but I think the new look of our organization will help him make a difference.”

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: It would have been easy for Stephen Curry. Very easy.

Nearly two years ago, Monta Ellis ‘welcomed’ Curry to his first pro' training camp by telling reporters the two couldn’t form a backcourt for the Golden State Warriors.

Today, the Warriors have a new owner and coach. And today, they’re also shopping Ellis around the league.

Ellis has been linked to Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic, Andre Iguodala and the Philadelphia 76ers, and Lamar Odom and the Los Angeles Lakers.

He recently grew tired of the rumors and requested a trade.

Now Curry could have extracted a little revenge and kicked Ellis when he’s down. Or, he could have offered a terse 'no comment' when asked about the situation

Instead, Curry had Ellis’ back. He explained how the Warriors’ core want him to return and are inviting him to training sessions during the lockout.

Such maturity is the difference between Curry and Ellis. And such maturity is the reason the Warriors prefer Curry over Ellis.

Warriors Top Assistant on Curry-Ellis backcourt: Are they willing to defend?

Without major roster changes in Oakland, Warriors' new lead assistant coach Mike Malone will be working with two guards who haven't consistently proved willing or able to stop dribble penetration, a center who hasn't shown up for the past two seasons and little depth. "Can you play defense with two small guards? It's a very interesting question, and I don't have a definite answer," Malone said. "Can they defend? Are they willing to defend? It could be hard to break those habits, but, if they want to win, they'll be willing."

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: The Golden State Warriors have confirmed what we suspected. They aren’t sure if Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis have the size to defend opposing backcourts.

No doubt about it, Curry and Ellis can play. They are dynamic. They are athletic. They are special. But they are small to play together.

This sentiment is nothing new. Two years ago, Ellis welcomed Curry to his first training camp by telling reporters he felt they couldn’t form a backcourt.

New Warriors owner Joe Lacob has reservations about Ellis. Rookie coach Mark Jackson has publicly praised Ellis, while dangling him in front of the Orlando Magic as trade bait.

Today, lead assistant Mike Malone, who is in charge of defense, told the media he has concerns about Curry and Ellis’ commitment to defense.

This is the greatest sign change is coming. After all, the Warriors have shopped Ellis, which led to his agent requesting a trade.

Remember, Malone was hired to re-shape the soft Warriors into a tougher, more defensive-minded group. If he has doubts, then Jackson, his boss, has doubts.

Those doubts will likely lead to Ellis having a new home. And soon.

Rumor: Warriors leave door open on trading Ellis?

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Warriors General Manager Larry Riley said the team is not planning to trade Monta Ellis.“We are not shopping Monta Ellis,” Riley said.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: General Managers have a lingo.

Take Larry Riley, the head suit for the Golden State Warriors. Riley recently told Sports Illustrated that the club isn’t shopping Monta Ellis, their lightning-quick scorer.

That, however, doesn’t mean the Warriors won’t trade Ellis. It means they won’t initiate trade discussions, but they’ll listen to trade offers. And who knows what happens if the right trade offer materializes?

So Riley can offer public assurances. He can compare the Warriors’ tiny backcourt of Ellis and Stephen Curry to the world champion Mavericks, who used smaller guards.

Riley is conveniently omitting that the Mavericks have superstar Dirk Nowitzki. The Warriors do not.

New coach Mark Jackson can say Ellis is the NBA’s third best shooting guard, capable of matching-up against anyone except Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade.

The door is open to a trade. How wide open remains to be seen, though.

Rumor: Warriors dealing Monta Ellis?

The Warriors, who struggled defensively last season, could be looking for a defensive addition and might be willing to part with Ellis because guard Stephen Curry has blossomed into a legitimate NBA scorer.

The deal: A straight-up trade of Ellis ($11 million a year through 2013-14, with that last season being a player option) for Iguodala (approximately $56 million remaining through the 2013-14 season, with the last season being a player option).

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Will a new coach bring a new backcourt to Golden State?

The Warriors are strongly considering hiring former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown, who demands air-tight defence from players.

If Brown is brought in, he’ll look to change the miniature backcourt of Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis. These two score in bunches, but opponents have a field day posting them up.

(Of course, there’s executive Jerry West and owner Joe Lacob. The Warriors’ new advisor might want to change things, while Lacob already mentioned breaking up this undersized duo.)

Who should go: Curry or Ellis?

Well, reports indicate the Warriors would move Ellis, despite posting impressive scoring numbers and displaying a newfound maturity in 2011.

Forget Curry’s mediocre sophomore campaign. He can play. Most importantly, he’s more of a natural table-setter than Ellis.

This would surely matter to Brown, as he sees Curry and Ellis as point guards because of size.

In 2011, the Warriors used an unorthodox backcourt. A new coach will bring changes. Time will tell if it is for the better.

Rumor: Ricky Rubio to sign with Minnesota, Jonny Flynn to Toronto?

If Rubio does indeed sign as expected, point guard Jonny Flynn's days in Minnesota are numbered. Sources also indicated to HOOPSWORLD that Flynn is almost sure to be traded in that case with the Toronto Raptors being one of the most probable destinations.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Whenever Ricky Rubio crosses the Atlantic and joins the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jonny Flynn becomes very available.

Sources say Rubio’s migration will happen this summer –and sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately, Flynn’s stock is at an all-time low, so the Timberwolves won’t get much for the sixth pick in 2009. Hopefully, executive David Kahn reflects on how he wasted this asset.

For instance, Kahn could have traded the lottery pick two years ago for an established pro, young asset(s), draft picks, or cap relief.

He could have drafted a player at another position like Stephen Curry (and used him at off-guard), DeMar DeRozan, Tyler Hansborough, James Johnson, or even Taj Gibson.

If Kahn was absolutely determined to have another table-setter, he could have drafted Brandon Jennings, Jrue Holiday, Ty Lawson, Jeff Teague, or Darren Collison.

Just not Flynn, who has underperformed. Now Kahn has the unpleasant task of trying to get something for his underperforming asset.

The above report cites Toronto as a likely home for Flynn. The former Syracuse star had expressed interest in suiting up for the Raptors.

Perhaps this happens. However, MLSE, the wealthy and dysfunctional holding company that owns the Raptors, has bigger fish to fry, specifically executive Bryan Colangelo.

Colangelo’s contract expires next month, and there has been no indication on whether he’ll be extended or let go. Instead, he twists in the wind.

Under such circumstances, it’s hard to imagine Colangelo acquiring Flynn. He’d have to trade veteran Jose Calderon and make a call on youngster Jerryd Bayless.

And he probably doesn’t have authorization to do anything except focus on the draft.

So the Rubio saga will continue when he lands in ‘The Frozen Tundra of Sota’. Only his presence will create a stir with Flynn.

Rumor: Warriors to keep Curry and Ellis?

Golden State general manager Larry Riley expects the strong scoring but small backcourt of 6-foot-3 guards Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry to be in tact when next season begins, he told Yahoo! Sports.

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Larry Riley, the GM, says one thing. Joe Lacob, the owner, has said differently.

It seems the Golden State Warriors can’t make up their mind on whether they want to go small, starting undersized Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis in the backcourt.

Riley sees the upside: Curry is a deadly shooter with a great basketball IQ, while Ellis is a sensational scorer. According to Riley, this more than compensates for both being 6-foot-3 and lean.

Lacob sees the negative: Curry and Ellis can both be posted up by bigger guards on the defensive end, who will then use their size to create mismatches. So the billionaire is open to trading either player.

Riley and Lacob both have a point. Each has expressed their view publicly. Obviously, the GM and owner shouldn’t have their differing views out for public consumption.

However, Lacob inherited Riley. Ten months ago, he bought the club from Chris Cohan, and got stuck with Riley –the lowest paid GM in the league (your draw your own conclusions).

Riley will apparently be returning, but nobody knows for sure. The Curry-Ellis backcourt is far from a sure thing.

Baron Davis: I`m still a top-five point guard

He also agreed with coach Byron Scott, who called Davis one of the NBA's top five point guards when healthy. "I believe so," Davis said from Thursday's practice. "I love the game, I study the game, I see the game with a different set of eyes than a lot of other guys."

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: There’s little doubt Baron Davis -when motivated, fit, and healthy- can play.

Unfortunately, Davis is rarely motivated, which means he’s hardly ever fit. Of course, an unmotivated and out of shape player is an often injured player.

After all, Davis has spent most of the last few years sulking about playing for the lowly Los Angeles Clippers, a team he picked as an unrestricted free agent.

He seemed more interested in making movies with his Hollywood buddies. He often had a ‘generous’ physique. And his play suffered.

Sadly, after teasing fans in Golden State, Davis has been a bust. He’s withered away his talent, content to take advantage of the perks that come with a plush, guaranteed contract.

None of this has impacted Davis’ confidence. After all, Davis –even when at full strength- isn’t a top five point guard.

Not anymore and not now. The one-spot currently belongs to up-and-comers like Chris Paul, Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, and Deron Williams.

There’s also established heads like Chauncey Billups, Steve Nash, and Tony Parker. And what about talented youngsters and veterans like Darren Collison, Stephen Curry, Ray Felton, Jason Kidd, and Andre Miller?

All have performed at a higher level than Davis. In fact, Davis, who was recently traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, might have trouble beating out Ramon Sessions for the starting table-setter job –if all things are equal.

Hopefully, Davis gets motivated, fit, and, as a result, stays healthy. Hopefully, he salvages whatever he can of his career. At 31, the clock is ticking.

Rumor: Monta Ellis staying with Golden State because Don Nelson gone?

Warriors guard Monta Ellis was mentioned in trade rumors this summer, but the team is no longer interested in moving him, according to The San Jose Mercury News.

Golden State (4-1) is off to their best start in 16 years and Ellis is playing much more efficiently so far this season.

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Maybe this is a coincidence. Maybe not.

There is, however, no disputing the obvious: Monta Ellis and the Golden State Warriors are a happier, more functional team since Don Nelson, the mad scientist on the sideline, retired.

To be fair, Nelson wins regular season games. And his small-ball approach occasionally captivated –who can forget the Warriors upset of the Dallas Mavericks in the 2007 playoffs?

He also alienated. Soon after the ‘We Believe’ miracle, Nelson soured on key players such as Baron Davis, Al Harrington, and Stephen Jackson.

Such dysfunction unfortunately influenced Ellis, a young combo guard with quicks and skills.

For instance, Ellis lied about injuring his ankle while riding a moped. The reason: he was in violation of his 6 year, $66 million extension.

Ellis also ‘welcomed’ rookie Stephen Curry to his first ever training camp by declaring he couldn’t form a backcourt with the lottery pick.  There were trade requests and disputes with the organization.

This, as they say, is water under the bridge.

Nelson is gone –for good. New Coach Keith Smart has the Warriors at 4-1. Ellis is happy with the team. The team is happy with Ellis.

Maybe this is a coincidence. Probably not.

Rondo left Team USA to ‘win another championship’

"It was great to practice every day against the best young talent in the league, a veteran like Chauncey Billups and play for a Hall of Fame coach [Mike Krzyzewski]," Rondo said. "But some of these guys hadn't played since April. Lamar [Odom] and I had just got out of Game 7. And next season is right around the corner. I feel like I had to take advantage of the opportunity I have right now to win another championship. It's not often you get to play with four Hall of Famers. Another couple of years and I won't have that."

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: It’s hard to criticize Rajon Rondo’s decision to step away from Team USA.

Rondo hadn’t recovered from the Boston Celtics’ crushing seven-game loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. He was drained and needed rest.

The emerging table-setter understands the championship window is closing on the green-and-white. Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce – also known as The Big Three - are hitting the end of their careers.

Rondo knows he needs to be at full strength in 2011 and 2012 because opportunities to win championships are rare. Playing in the World Championship would be tiring.

Fortunately, Stars and Stripes had talented floor leaders in Chauncey Billups, Stephen Curry, Eric Gordon, Derrick Rose, and Russell Westbrook. His departure wasn’t an issue and, in fact, eased the log-jam at point guard.

Rondo’s choice may be a win-win for all involved.

Rumor: Monta Ellis takes 'blame', but Warriors still looking at trading him?

"A month before the season was over with, I really had to sit back and blame myself in a sense because I'm that leader; I'm that one who everybody feeds off of," Ellis said. "Everything that went on last year (regarding Curry) shouldn't have gone on. I blame myself."

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Finally, a sign of maturity from Monta Ellis.

Despite his tremendous talent, the lightning quick combo guard has failed to fulfill expectations as a franchise player for the Golden State Warriors.

After all, he injured his leg riding a moped – the vehicle of choice for European males and American teenagers. Ellis, of course, lied about how he sustained the injury because cruising in a moped violates his contract.

Ellis then spent a season or so feuding with Coach Don Nelson and the Warriors. Worst of all, he called out teammate Stephen Curry before his first training camp in 2009, saying he couldn’t play with the then rookie sharpshooter.

Give Ellis credit for manning up. Give Ellis credit for admitting publicly he was wrong. And give Ellis credit for trying to move on.

Is it too late, though?

Over the summer, Chris Cohan sold the Warriors for a record $450 million to Joe Lacob and Peter Guber. Thankfully, wholesale changes are coming to The Bay.

The new regime aren’t enamoured with Nelson, the mad-scientist sideline boss. Reports indicate Nellie will be given his walking papers, even though it could cost ownership $6 million.

A change on the bench doesn’t mean Ellis is secure. Reports indicate Lacob and Guber aren’t sold on Ellis’ play and attitude, so a trade could be in the works.

Perhaps Ellis feels the need to speak up and explain himself. Whatever his motivation, it’s a start. Only time will tell if it’s enough for him to stay with the Warriors long-term.

Brandon Jennings on Team USA snub: It's gotta be the shoes

It's not my call. That's on them," Jennings said. "But if you want to get technical about it and you really want to look at it, half of the guys there are Nike guys. I'm not saying it's a Nike thing, but Nike is kind of running a lot of things right now. To have a guy like myself on the USA team that's flashy and really outgoing, you don't want Under Armour to get all that [publicity]. "I'm just telling you how it is."

Link

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: To quote Brooklyn legend Mars Blackmon: ‘It’s got to be the shoes’.

At least, this is the reason second year guard Brandon Jennings believes Team USA didn’t invite him to try out for the World Championship squad. Stars and Stripes were sponsored by Nike. Jennings is sponsored by Under Armour.

Jennings sees a connection. The Swoosh supposedly concocted a grand conspiracy of Oliver Stone proportion to keep Jennings – a pretty good, but hardly great table-setter - off the squad.

There’s a simpler and better answer: Jennings isn’t as good as he thinks.

Team USA had other options. Better options. For instance, the coaching staff selected Chauncey Billups and Derrick Rose at point guard. Both are more advanced than Jennings. Neither wears Nike.

Off the bench, the Americans had Stephen Curry, Eric Gordon, and Russell Westbrook. Curry makes Team USA because they needed outside shooting. Gordon surprised the coaching staff. And Westbrook’s energy and athleticism was irreplaceable.

Frankly, the 2010 American team won gold at the World Championship because everybody parked their egos at the door. Nobody bitched. Nobody moaned.

Would the coaches want someone who describes himself as flashy and outgoing, and believes a multinational shoe company is out to get him? Or, would they want a player who puts the team first?

There’s an easy answer. And it makes more sense than Mars Blackmon.

Parting ways best for Rajon Rondo and Team USA

The Celtics point guard withdrew from Team USA yesterday, sensing the writing on the wall as coach Mike Krzyzewski began to test different backcourt combinations minus Rondo.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Did he withdraw? Or, did he get cut?

These are the questions surrounding Rajon Rondo’s departure from Team USA on Tuesday afternoon. Yesterday’s news may have been sudden, but it wasn't surprising.

Rondo swallowed his first career DNP-CD (Did Not Play-Coaches Decision) against Spain. While his poor outside range and inconsistent free-throw shooting were rarely exposed with the Boston Celtics, it would have been a liability in international play.

Clearly, Rondo didn’t fit Coach Mike Krzyewski’s plans, so parting ways made sense.

After losing the championship in heartbreaking fashion to the Los Angeles Lakers, Rondo needed time off to heal his mind and body. A death in his extended family wouldn’t have helped, either.

Team USA is also point guard heavy, with table-setters Chauncey Billups, Stephen Curry, Derrick Rose, and Russell Westbrook. All are better shooters than Rondo.  Even if he made the final roster, there would have been few minutes available.

Bottom line: whether he withdrew or got cut, Rondo and stars-and-stripes are better off after yesterday’s decision.

Could Larry Ellison save the Golden State Warriors?

Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison is among "more than a dozen" suitors who have submitted non-binding bids for the Warriors, a source close to the negotiations said Tuesday.

"He is a part of it," the source said.

According to another source, so are the San Francisco Giants, 24 Hour Fitness owner Mark Mastrov, an NFL owner, a former Lakers star and a group of prominent Chinese businesspeople, among others. Galatioto Sports Partners and Warriors owner Chris Cohan will choose the best prospects in the next week.

Link

HoopsVibe's Call: Give Larry Ellison a cape, tights, and Dwight Howard/Shaquille O'Neal's phone booth because he could be Superman and save the sorry Golden State Warriors.

Ellison, if approved as Golden State's owner, would bring something to The Bay that has been in short supply: sanity. Simply put, Cohan and Coach Don Nelson have ruined the Warriors. There's zero plan. Players, both past and present, have had significant issues with the club (see Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, and Al Harrington). Even their loyal fans are disgusted.

The right owner, Ellison, would surely hire the right basketball people -not Nelson and his group of faithful lackeys on the bench and in the front office. Talented youngsters like Andris Biedrins, Stephen Curry, and Ellis could then blossom with proper mentorship.

A change at the top would do Golden State good. It starts with Cohan cashing out as owner and being replaced with someone such as Ellison.

Is Cohan the problem with the Golden State Warriors? Does he have to sell for the team to turn things around? Get at us in the comment box below with thoughts.

NBA Names Tyreke Evans Rookie of the Year

Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings is the recipient of the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy as the 2009-10 T-Mobile NBA Rookie of the Year, the NBA announced today.

Evans received 67 first-place votes (491 points) from a panel of 123 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Golden State’s Stephen Curry finished second with 391 points and Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings finished third with 204 points. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote.

Scott Skiles: Brandon Jennings Should Have Been RoY

The Rookie of the Year Award will be given to Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings later this week.

Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Scott Skiles believes his rookie point guard, Brandon Jennings, should have won the award. However, Skiles was more than understanding on why the voters chose Evans.

"Those [Jennings, Evans, Stephen Curry] were the three guys that stood out," Skiles said prior to Game 5 against the Hawks. "Each person that votes has their own criteria. All I can say is, I find it hard to believe there's any rookie that has been more valuable to their team than Brandon has been."

"But how can you argue with what Tyreke did or what Curry did," he said. "Those guys had great years as well."

Dell Curry Not Allowed to Vote in RoY Ballot

The NBA has taken away Charlotte Bobcats broadcaster Dell Curry's rookie of the year vote because his son is among the leading candidates for the award.

Curry's son, Stephen Curry, is averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 assists per game for Golden State. He and Kings guard Tyreke Evans, who is averaging 20.3 points and 5.8 assists, are considered the front-runners to be top rookie.

"Oh, he's voting for Tyreke," Stephen Curry joked after his team's 103-94 loss to the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night. "That's good for me then. ... Just to be in that conversation is great for me."

NBA spokesman Tim Frank says Dell Curry will be allowed to vote for all the other postseason awards, but the league did not want to put him in an awkward position with the rookie award.
