It’s a Rough Game for Mascots: Suns Gorilla Beat Up at Dave & Busters and David West Knocks Out Cleveland’s, Moondog

While April has been a tough month for some of the players (Dwight Howard, Lamar Odom, to name a few) it has also been rough on a few of the NBA’s beloved mascots.

The Suns mascot, the gorilla, got into a recent skirmish at a team event at Dave & Busters.  Apparently, the mascot went up to high five a Miami Heat fan who was having none of it.  When the Heat fan left the gorilla hangin’ he playfully kicked the fan, who then got up and very unplayfully (I know that’s not a word) punched the gorilla in the face, giving him a bloody nose.

The police were called to the scene but charges weren’t pressed against either the gorilla or the Heat fan.

Rewind back to April 11th when the Pacers visited the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

For those that don’t know, Moondog, the Cavs mascot, picks a “play fight” with a member of the opposing team during every pre-game ceremony.  Well on April 11th, Moondog picked Indiana’s David West, which was the wrong choice.  Apparently, West is a trained boxer and frequently incorporates boxing into his fitness regimen.

He’s also a 6 foot 9 inch tall, 240 pound, power forward.  Essentially, he’s not to be messed with.

But sure enough, when Moondog lunged at West in the pre-game “play fight” it looked like West got a little excited and thought he was in the ring because he caught the mascot with a straight right to the chin, dropping him to the floor under the basket.

Moondog ended up going to the hospital for further evaluation and was released shortly thereafter.

But you could tell West didn’t intentionally knock Moondog out; he even went on to say that “it was definitely an accident…I really hope he’s ok.  Make sure he knows I’m sorry.”

The Moondog-less Cavs ended up losing that game 104-98 in OT.

As much as I feel badly to admit it, the video made me laugh.  Keep in mind, it’s only funny because we know Moondog will be ok.

He’ll just know not to mess with David West in the future.

Hoopsvibe’s Word to the Wise:  If you’re aspiring to be an NBA mascot, just know it’s not all slam dunking off trampolines.  It’s a hard knock life.
