UConn’s Villanueva cleared to play
Storrs, CT (Sports Network) – University of Connecticut freshman forward
Charlie Villanueva is finally eligible to play when the Huskies take on Army
Saturday at Gampel Pavilion.
Villanueva missed the third-ranked Huskies’ first six games due to eligibility
issues that stemmed from workouts he participated in prior to the NBA Draft.
The 6-foot-10 Villanueva was contemplating entering the draft straight out of
high school, but thought better of it after undergoing workouts.
Villanueva joins a talented Huskies squad anchored by star center Emeka Okafor
and guard Ben Gordon. Connecticut started the season as the top ranked team
in the country before losing to Georgia Tech in the Preseason NIT.
The Brooklyn native played at Blair Academy in New Jersey last season, his
senior year of high school. Villanueva averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds
while playing with current Duke freshman phenom Luol Deng.
