Illinois’ Williams sidelined with broken jaw

Champaign, IL (Sports Network) – Illinois guard Deron Williams is expected
to miss at least three games after he underwent surgery Friday to correct a
broken jaw.

Williams suffered the injury during Thursday’s 85-43 win against Maryland-
Eastern Shore. He fractured his jaw in two places after colliding with an
Eastern Shore player just over a minute into the second half. Williams left
the court immediately holding his jaw and was taken to a hospital for x-rays.

The sophomore scored five points and dished out four assists in Thursday’s
victory. He is averaging 12.9 points and 6.6 assists in seven games this
season. Williams has also recorded a team-best 12 steals this year.

Head coach Bruce Weber is hopeful to have Williams back in the lineup for
Illinois’ January 3 contest against Illinois State. The Illini will then open
up Big Ten play on January 7 against Ohio State.
