Mountain West Conference to add Texas Christian
Fort Worth, TX (Sports Network) – Texas Christian University is expected to
announce at a Friday news conference that it will accept an invitation to join
the Mountain West Conference.
The move is pending the approval of the university’s board of trustees and
would commence with the 2005-06 athletic season.
Once official, the Mountain West will be the fourth league that TCU has called
home in the last decade. The now-defunct Southwest Conference was disbanded in
1995 before the Horned Frogs jumped to the Western Athletic Conference, where
they stayed for five seasons. Following its stay in the WAC, Texas Christian
then became a member of Conference USA a few years ago.
The Horned Frogs will join such schools as Brigham Young, Colorado State, Utah
and Air Force and would be the conference’s ninth member.
In 2003, TCU’s football team finished 11-2 with a final No. 25 national
ranking. The Horned Frogs, who lost to Boise State in the inaugural Fort Worth
Bowl, started the campaign with 10 straight victories and were knocking on the
door of the Bowl Championship Series before a November 20 loss to Southern
Mississippi ended their BCS hopes.
As for basketball, the 2003-04 TCU squad holds a 7-10 overall mark. They are
currently in third place in Conference USA’s National Division at 3-3, behind
UAB and Memphis.
