Tragedy strikes at Stephen F. Austin State University

Nacogdoches, TX (Sports Network) – Greg Wallace, a member of the Stephen F.
Austin State University basketball team, collapsed on the court Friday
afternoon while shooting baskets in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.

Emergency personnel were called to the gym and took Wallace to Nacogdoches
Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No cause of death has been
determined at this time.

“Greg’s death has stunned our players and coaching staff,” said SFA coach
Danny Kaspar. “We are all feeling pretty numb right now. You don’t ever think
this will happen to someone to whom you are so close. Greg was the consumate
team player and did whatever was asked of him. I really thought he would make
significant contributions to our team next year because of his court
intelligence and savvy.”

Wallace transferred from Army and was forced to sit out this season because of
NCAA rules. At Army last season, Wallace averaged four points and 2.2 rebounds
a game in 20 outings.

The team was en route to Hammond, Louisiana for a match-up with Southeastern
Louisiana at the time of the incident and returned to Nacogdoches upon hearing
the news. The game will be made up at a date to be determined.
