15th Edition – 02/16/2004

Well…I guess that rumor I heard about the coaching Grim Reaper heading to Philly was true. After coaching 52 games, the 76ers dismissed Randy Ayers and replaced him with Assistant Coach Chris Ford. You gotta feel for a guy like Ayers. For years he sat on the bench as an assistant, waiting for the opportunity to become a head coach, and when it finally arrived, it’s in a no-win situation. The Sixers maxed out after their second place finish in the 2001 NBA Finals. Larry Brown knew it, which is why he jumped ship for Detroit (and don’t believe anything else).

15th Edition - 02/16/2004

As his second in command, Ayers was promoted to lead a below average team centered around a 6 foot 165 pound shooting guard. This formula was able to work for Brown, who has a stellar reputation for getting the best out of his players and was given the authority by the Sixers’ brass to move them if they didn’t adhere to his demands. But for a new coach like Ayers, who wasn’t given the same say-so power by the organization, that wasn’t going to happen. And as a result, you have the current disastrous 76ers season. One day they smash an uninspired Lakers team after Allen Iverson questions their toughness. The next, they get served by thirty–AT HOME–by the BOSTON CELTICS! Randy Ayers never stood a chance.

Don’t be fooled by all the lovey dovey basketball in New Jersey, the honeymoon period is almost over. And once the “New Coach High” deflates, the Nets will pay for the sacrificing of Byron Scott. So let it be written, so let it be fact!

You know who’s the happiest person to see Stephon Marbury as a Knick? Joe Johnson. People are able to see what he can do with the ball now that he gets to touch it.

The Lakers are down by eighteen to the Orlando Magic, and who leads them to victory? That’s right, Luke Walton.

Did anyone enjoy Mark Cuban CHECKING Larry Brown as much as I did? I doubt it.

The fact that the Golden State Warriors scored only TWO points in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Raptors isn’t just surdiculous, it’s SURDICULOUS!!! (Was that loud enough?)

Shareef Abdur-Rahim will finally know what it’s like to win on more than just an occasion… On the other hand, The Rasheed Wallace Era has sadly ended in Portland. I heard the city is planning a parade…I’m serious.

The other day, there was a line outside of NIKETOWN in Beverly Hills at 6:30 in the morning. The things that people do. Note: I probably would’ve been one of them if I didn’t have a previous engagement. Those new Air Huaraches are fly. Curses!

The Houston Rockets have Yao Ming, Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, Jim Jackson and Maurice Taylor and they are the third worst scoring team in the league. Here’s my dilemma… How? If Jeff Van Gundy can’t figure out how to score and win consistently with this team, he should go back to broadcasting.

I’m a fan of Carmelo Anthony and I think he’s having a great rookie season, but of all the Western Conference forwards selected, who does he think should’ve been taken off the All-Star team for him?

Buy or Sell? Is ESPN’s “Around The Horn” better off without Max Kellerman?

The Lakers erected a bronze statue of Magic Johnson in the Star Plaza of the Staples Center. It’s a fitting tribute to GREATEST Laker of all time if you ask me.
