St. Bonaventure placed on three years’ probation
Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) – The NCAA Division I Committee on
Infractions Thursday placed St. Bonaventure University on probation for three
years due to violations in the men’s basketball program.
The committee, which cited a lack of institutional control, also barred the
basketball team from competing in any postseason play in 2004.
The case stemmed from violations of bylaws concerning the improper
certification of a student-athlete as well as extra benefits from an
impermissible academic arrangement.
Last season, the Bonnies had to forfeit six conference victories and were
banned from postseason play by the Atlantic 10 after junior Jamil Terrell was
ruled ineligible for violating junior college transfer guidelines.
The fallout cost head coach Jan van Breda Kolff his job, while university
president Robert Wickenheiser and athletic director Gothard Lane resigned.
