UMBC names Monroe new basketball head coach

Catonsville, MD (Sports Network) – Randy Monroe was named the men’s basketball
head coach Tuesday at Maryland-Baltimore County.

Monroe, the school’s acting head coach since March 2, has been an assistant
coach at UMBC since the 1994-95 season.

The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native coached the Retrievers in their 65-59
opening-round loss to Stony Brook in the America East Conference Tournament
after Tom Sullivan resigned from the post on March 11.

“This is a tremendous opportunity,” Monroe said. “An opportunity most
assistant coaches live for.”

UMBC assistant coaches Jeff Estis and John Schaller are expected to remain on
Monroe’s staff.

Monroe had previously served as an assistant coach at his alma mater Cheyney
(1985-87), LaSalle (1988-93) and Vanderbilt (1993-94) before going to UMBC.
