Richmond, VA (Sports Network) – Virginia Commonwealth signed men’s head
basketball coach Jeff Capel to a six-year contract on Tuesday.

Capel has compiled a 41-18 record in two seasons at VCU. The Rams posted a
23-8 overall record and a 14-4 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association,
winning the conference’s regular season and tournament titles. Capel’s team
also earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, losing to Wake Forest in
the first round, 79-78.

“I am happy and excited that this is completed,” said the 29-year old Capel,
who is the youngest coach in Division I. “We have created a strong foundation
here at VCU over the past two seasons and now look to build on this success.”

Following the season, Capel talked with Auburn and Miami-Florida about its
coaching vacancies, but decided to remain at VCU.

“We are excited to have Coach Capel committed to VCU for the next six years,”
said VCU Director of Athletics Dr. Richard L. Sander. “It is a strong
statement about the job he’s done here. We have the pieces to compete
favorably on a national level.”
