Delonte West will declare for draft
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Saint Joseph’s guard Delonte West will
follow teammate Jameer Nelson’s example and declare for the NBA Draft as a
junior, without hiring an agent.
Several media outlets reported the decision Thursday, and said West could make
the announcement as early as Friday.
Nelson, this season’s consensus college Player of the Year and a likely first-
round selection in June’s draft, reported to the NBA’s pre-draft camp in
Chicago last year before deciding to stick around for his senior season.
West, a junior, is looking for the same opportunity, following his teammate’s
lead in not hiring an agent. If he doesn’t remove his name from draft
consideration by June 17th, he will lose his college eligibility.
Nelson’s decision proved wise, as he and West led Saint Joseph’s to a dream
season that started out with the Hawks (30-2) winning their first 27 games.
They were ranked No. 1 in both major polls for the first time in school
history before making it all the way to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament
as a top seed.
West, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard, averaged 18.9 points and 5.4 rebounds in 32
starts. Deadly from the outside, he shot 41 percent from three-point range
(56-of-136) and 51 percent from the field overall.
If he decides to return for his senior season, West would no doubt be among
the preseason favorites for Player of the Year honors.
