Thad Matta accepts coaching position at Ohio State

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) – Thad Matta has accepted an offer to coach the
men’s basketball team at Ohio State. Director of athletics Andy Geiger
announced the hiring on Thursday and scheduled a Friday afternoon press
conference to formally introduce Matta.

The 36-year-old Matta will receive a seven-year contract with a first-year
salary of $760,000, a signing bonus of $300,000 and deferred compensation over
seven years of $2,000,000. Additional terms of the contract have not yet been

Matta replaces Jim O’Brien, who was fired last month for a violation of NCAA

“We are bringing in a wonderful teacher of the game and a tireless worker
whose enthusiasm will elevate Ohio State basketball,” said Geiger. “I am very
excited to have Thad Matta here.”

Matta spent three highly successful campaigns at Xavier after beginning his
head coaching career at Butler in 2000. In his four years as a collegiate
coach, Matta has compiled a record of 102-31.

The Musketeers finished the 2003-04 season with a 26-11 mark and advanced to
the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, before losing to Duke 66-63 at the
Georgia Dome.
