Vanderbilt gets UVA transfer
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) – Derrick Byars is transferring to the
Vanderbilt basketball team after spending the last two years playing for the
University of Virginia.
The 6-7, 215-pound Byars, who must sit out the upcoming season because of NCAA
transfer rules, will be eligible to play for the Commodores in the 2005-06
Byars, a Memphis native, averaged 7.5 points and 3.4 in 31 games (18 starts)
last season for the Cavaliers. The swingman shot 46.7 percent (85-of-182) from
the field and 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from three-point range.
Recruited heavily by Vanderbilt when he was at Ridgeway High School, Byars can
practice with the team this season.
“We’re very excited to have Derrick become a part of our program,” said
Commodores head coach Kevin Stallings. “He is an excellent shooting small
forward who will bring his toughness and versatility to our [program].”
Vanderbilt also announced that junior guard Adam Payton is leaving the
