Southern Illinois suspends two basketball players

Carbondale, IL (Sports Network) – Southern Illinois University has suspended
guards Stetson Hairston and Michael Dale from its men’s basketball team.

Hairston was suspended indefinitely, while Dale will miss the first three
games of the 2004-05 season. The two were apparently involved in an off-campus
fight in July.

“I’ve determined both players clearly violated our team conduct policy and
warranted punishment,” Salukis head coach Chris Lowery said. “We’ll continue
to wait and see what happens in the court of law.”

Neither player was arrested for their involvement in the incident, but the duo
had legal charges filed against them in Jackson County Court earlier this

Hairston averaged 9.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last season as a
junior. Dale, who is entering his sophomore season, has yet to suit up for
Southern Illinois.

The Salukis finished 25-5 last season and were ousted by Alabama in the
opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
