Explorers set to name Giannini new basketball coach
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – La Salle is expected to name John Giannini
its new head men’s basketball coach.
The Philadelphia Daily News, citing unidentified sources, reported Saturday
that the school is set to make the announcement early next week.
Giannini has been the coach at Maine for the past eight seasons. The 41-year-
old led the Black Bears to the only two 20-win seasons in school history and
two America East Conference titles. His .530 winning percentage is the best in
Prior to his stint at Maine, Giannini posted an impressive 168-38 record in
seven seasons at Division III Rowan in New Jersey. He led the Profs to the
national championship while winning coach of the year honors in 1996.
Giannini replaces Billy Hahn, who resigned on July 24 amid allegations of rape
involving former players. Michael Cleaves and leading scorer Gary Neal are
awaiting trial on rape and other related charges for the June incident.
Both players are no longer students at the school.
