Nicholls State names Piper hoops coach
Thibodaux, LA (Sports Network) – Nicholls State University announced the
hiring of J.P. Piper Wednesday as its new head men’s basketball coach. Piper,
who had served as an assistant coach with the Colonels for the past two
seasons, replaces Ricky Blanton.
“I am pleased to accept the recommendation of the screening committee and the
athletic director and to recommend J. P. to our Board of Supervisors as our
new head coach,” said Nicholls State president Stephen Hulbert. “This
university remains committed to a competitive program in men’s basketball, and
I am confident that J. P. will keep our young men focused on their academic
progress as well as their performance on the court.”
Piper came to Nicholls State after spending eight years as the head coach at
The Dunham School in Baton Rouge. There he guided the Tigers to a Class A
State Championship (1997-98), a Class A State Runner-Up (1998-1999) and
grabbed the Class A Coach of the Year (1999). Piper was also selected to be
the head coach of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association East All-Star
Team in 1999.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to direct this program,” Piper said. “This
decision provides some stability for the basketball players at Nicholls State
and I believe it will support the progress that they have made up to this
