Final Score: (6) Syracuse 104, Northern Colorado 54
Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) – Hakim Warrick netted 19 points and Syracuse
roared out to an early 24-0 lead as the sixth-ranked Orange opened their
2004-05 season with a 104-54 pasting of Northern Colorado in the opening round
of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the Carrier Dome. Josh Pace contributed
13 points for Syracuse, which will host Princeton Friday in the second round.
Gerry McNamara drained 3-of-5 three-point attempts in an 11-point effort,
while Darryl Watkins had 12 off the bench. Freshman Sean Taibi finished with
16 points for Northern Colorado, a program in only its second season at the
Division I level and which managed just six wins a year ago. The Bears will
face Bucknell, which fell 61-48 to Princeton in Thursday’s opener, on Friday
in the consolation contest. The Bears proved to be no match for a loaded
Orange squad led by Warrick, a preseason All-American who added 10 rebounds
and five assists while sinking 8- of-12 shots from the floor.
Final Score: (12) Mississippi State 53, Fairfield 49
Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) – Ontario Harper finished with a career- high
17 points to lead 12th-ranked Mississippi State to a 53-49 win over Fairfield
in the Coaches versus Cancer Classic at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention
Complex. Gary Ervin and Winsome Frazier each scored nine points for the
Bulldogs (1-0), who will take on Birmingham Southern in the second round on
Friday. Deng Gai posted a team-high 14 points for the Stags (0-1), who will
face Alabama A&M in a consolation round Friday. Piotr Stelmach added eight
points off the bench for Mississippi State, which overcame an early eight-
point deficit without forward Lawrence Roberts, who served a one-game
suspension for failing to repay expenses to an NBA team.
Final Score: (24) Memphis 102, Savannah State 40
Memphis, TN (Sports Network) – Rodney Carney scored 21 points and Anthony Rice
added 17, leading No. 24 Memphis to a 102-40 rout of Savannah State in the
first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Sean Banks chipped in 15 points
and Jeremy Hunt scored 14 for Memphis (1-0), which advanced to face George
Mason in the second round on Saturday. Darius Washington and Joey Dorsey added
10 points apiece in the win. Savannah State (0-1), entering its third year in
Division I basketball, shot just 25 percent from the field and was never in
the game. Josh Barker scored 12 points and Donald Carson added 10 in the loss.
Memphis opened the game on a tear, hitting nine of its first 12 shots to take
a 24-0 lead.
