Clemson rules freshman guard ineligible for season
Clemson, SC (Sports Network) – Clemson freshman guard Troy Mathis has been
ruled ineligible to play by the school this year for his involvement in an on-
campus fight two months ago.
Mathis — who was originally suspended from the university for a full year —
had that penalty cut in half, allowing him to attend classes in January.
To be eligible to play next season, Mathis must earn 24 credit hours by next
fall, an impossibility had his suspension not been reduced.
Mathis was expected to get a lot of playing time this year and perhaps even
compete for the starting point guard position.
His arrest on September 6 and a subsequent charge for assault and battery
leaves sophomore Vernon Hamilton and junior Shawan Robinson to man the guard
